Because I have understood that running the Windows CLI under WINE is faster than the native Linux client.

If I'm wrong, I can just run the native Linux client, but it is an old, relatively slow machine and it could mean an hour or more per WU difference.

Ok.. I have SUSE 9 on a hard drive at home and I will try to get SETI running on it using Wine tonight. If your interested I could post a tut.

The big L2 cache chips were useless, the processing times went sky high.

You are right ,v3.03 increased WU times by about 50% over v3.0 ,especially in the big cache cpus (eg PIII 600 Kats) ,the PIII coppermines didnt fare quite as bad but there wasn't a huge difference.Btw v3.03 was enforced over 3yrs ago now! (woah! that long already!:Q) (Feb 1st 2001)
As a rough comparision to your old PIII 600 Kats I've got an old Celeron 366 @566MHz (103FSB,CAS2)on a BX mbrd which does WUs in 9.9hrs with v3.03 CLI

V3.08 is about 12% slower than v3.03,supposedly they only made security enhancments

As a result v3.03 CLI is now the fast one!

Oh yeah ,my XP1700 @2.04GHz on an Nfrc2 mbrd does average WUs in just under 2.5hrs

If it is like the one I have, Then it is run @ 10x210 for 2.1GHZ with some decent PC3200 on an Nforce2 MB


yeah, take an epox 8RDA+ and some Twinmos ram & a 1700+
run the mem 1:1 @ 219mhz (438 ddr) with timings of 3-2-2-2.0 & mult at 10x
Get Seti WU's right around 2 hours each - some 1:58 and others up to 2:10
