Hey guys. I usually do a whole lot of lurking here just trying to learn from what everyone has to say. I wanted to post a topic to thank you all for helping me out. Today, the last parts of my computer finally arrived. I installed the hard drive, cpu, and network card then booted it up. On the first try it started and I got my OS installed. (I LOVE WindowsXP. Nice improvement over 98SE.) Everything is going great. All the hardware works, and I have yet to run into any software problems. My 1.8A is running at 2.0 GHz right now, and I'll be cranking it up once I feel that the CPU has been "burnt-in." It is such a great feeling being able to put together a computer from scratch and have it work. Thanks a bunch to everyone here. You've made me an incredibly happy person.

OK, it's burnt in now.....up the FSB to 133 and see what happens.

[*]You might need to bump core voltage to 1.6+v
[*]Try memory at 1:1 first

crank out some prime95 as well...it is a good test...it will find any power or heat issues...

I have my 1.8@2.538 now steady at 1.8v....It will post at 2.610ghz and even go into winxp and run sandra benches...It wont run pirme95, fails immediately. So heat is unlikely culprit but power or cpu limitation...

I would boost it to 120fsb right off the bat...Mine did it at default voltage...At 133fsb it boots at 1.55v but requires 1.65v to run prime95 for 12 hours...At 137fsb it requires 1.7v...At 140 fsb it takes 1.775...at 141 it takes 1.8v

Highest temp seen is 52c full load cranking of prime95....

Heh. Thanks. I'll probably crank it up either tomorrow or Saturday when I've got some time. (Haven't had too much time today. Just wanted to get everything installed.) I'm probably going to spend tomorrow carrying over all the files from my current computer and getting the new one set-up just how I want it. Then Prime95 will be installed and I'll just jump the fsb right up to 133. (I did the wire mod and have the default voltage set at 1.7V. But for now, the voltage is at 1.5V. I figure I'll see how high I can get it on the default voltage before I crank it up. It's a Malaysia chip and I'll post the specs and specifics on it when I get the time. (Chip was produced on January 14th of this year, and the chip is from Malaysia as stated earlier. Heh. That's all I can remember right now.)

later i bought the maxtor 40 gb from best buy.
i need to know what else i'll need. any advice will be greatly appreciated. i think all thats left is a case, and graphics card.
also any suggestions on what kind of stuff i should get will help too. thanks a lot.

Get a good 300 to 350 watt antec or enermax power supply....get a case with a lot of room and 2 case fans...

With that system I would get anything less then a GF3 ti200....

FYI, Antec power supplies are manufactured by Channel Well. You can pick up a Chieftec case & 420w Channel Well power supply for around 92.00 shipped.

CRAP CRAP CRAP!!! I think I'm doing something wrong here. Right now, I have my fsb set at 112 MHz with a 1.6V Vcore. I am able to run Prime95 for over an hour (Before I quit it) without any errors. However, the temps of my CPU seem to be WAY too high. Idle, they hover around 50 degrees, and under full load they hover around 60 degrees. I think that is just a bit too hot. Is this because the AS3 hasn't had time to "cure?" (I've only had the computer running for about 9 hours total so far.) Since this is my first overclocking experience I guess I'm kind of going into uncharted territory.

(I'm using AS3 with a Thermaltake 478 P4 Volcano.) Although I am happy with getting a 2.0GHz CPU for the price of a 1.8, it's a little upsetting that I'm not able to get to the 133 fsb. Hopefully I can figure out why I can't get my speed up any higher.

Yes, that temp is kinda on the high side for the cpu core voltage you are using. Is this your Thermaltake HSF?

Reach in and touch the heatsink, is it hot or barely lukewarm?

I have an AVC sunflower on my P4 and full load temp is 49C

After turning off the computer, I reached in and touched the heatsink and it was fairly warm. I could keep my fingers on it without it feeling too hot, but it was still noticeably warm. This is my heatsink Thermaltake P4 Volcano. I'm going to pull it off tomorrow and reapply the AS3 to it. Perhaps I didn't install it properly and that's why I'm getting such high temperatures.
