I feel like a dumbass to be the guy that had to call the FD to get a cat, but here we are so we might as well all have a good laugh.
I have a cat. She's an inside only cat, never goes out side for any reason. She's never known any different. It's warm enough here in NJ to have the windows open at night, so most of my house is open. I have one window above my bed on the 3rd floor that had an AC unit in it last summer. This means it doesn't have a screen. It's the only window without a screen. It's usually closed but last night was particularly warm so the g/f & I opened it.
Around 4 AM we heard a cat meowing incessantly outside. Of course since my cat is an inside cat it couldn't possibly be mine right? Solution? Close the window and go back to sleep.
At 10 AM I wake up and I'm still hearing a cat. It dawns on me: I have never heard a cat outside since I moved here, & I haven't seen my cat since last night sometime. A quick search of the usual hiding places turns up nothing.
I go outside and find this:
Keep in mind this is a 3 story house with a steep roof, she's 30 feet off the ground and I don't have a ladder (not that it would be remotely safe to walk up there even if I did). None of the windows are close enough to roof surfaces to be able to grab her, nor would she be able to jump into any of them since the roof is less than a foot wide around the windows.
After many phone calls (fire department, police, animal control, tree services, etc) eventually two ladder trucks, two police vehicles, animal control, and at least one other support vehicle showed up.

And finally in the net:

Needless to say the window is now closed and won't be opened again.
