Thanks Obama, Daycare cost is ridiculous.

Currently paying $1800 for my toddler. If I have two kids, I'd be paying $3500 a MONTH. That's someone's $50-55K salary before taxes, full time.

And ATOT parents know that this is the norm. My friends pay similar up in Boston, and even down in south- ATL.

The friend of mine in ATL makes similar salary as mine, but the low CoL is amazing. 6 bed, 5 ba house for 650K...AND he still gets to enjoy all the cosmo/trendy/metro scenes the Atlanta offers as a city.

Damn, that's expensive.

My daughter's daycare has stayed fairly steadily around $500 a month here in Ohio. It was a little more when she was an infant (maybe $650 a month) but nothing close to what you are paying.

$500-600 per kid here, plus multi-kid discounts.

Even my friends in the Sac area only pay ~$900-1000 per kid, and that's with all of the stupid CA regulations.

Infant care is brutal. We were up to almost $1200 a month in podunkville central, IL. It drops about a $50 a week for each year they get older because of how ratios change. I think my worst year was $19,000 in daycare bills. Right now my 4 year old costs about $190 a week and aftercare at my daughters grade school is $50 a week.

I did the math and for me I basically needed to make around $42,000 or more for it to be "worth it" after taxes and other things were factored in. A good friend of mine is college educated and was working for the state in the wildlife division and making about $35,000 a year. They had twins. If he still tried to work it would have been a net loss of like $10,000 a year for them. It was much cheaper to be a stay at home dad.

I hear a lot of Nordic countries include this already built into your taxes. I imagine for many you're left with more money after being raped on taxes than you might be in the US after having to pay for everything.

One of the guys I work with always keeps telling me:

"You can have kids or you can have EVERYTHING else."

We did as much part time as was possible to keep costs low. But average full time daycare was $125/wk or $500/mo.

Now he just goes to the B&G Club at $25/yr

Hire a Nanny or Au pair (less expensive). They barely get paid since you provide room and board, seriously I'd bet its a good amount cheaper.
You do have to let them use a car occasionally and you can't work them 7 days a week but you can assign light cleaning duties or food prep a few days per week. I used to know some when I was younger.

It's always been expensive (though the figures you quote are outrageous - find a good private home).

About 20 years ago, my BIL was a (VERY) young, struggling parent and his daycare bill was ~$650/mo. He exclaimed, "that's a Porsche payment!" and sadly he was right.

Wow, $21.6K per year just for day car fee and then other costs on top of that. Yike.

you get tax credits for daycare right? helps soften the blow a little bit... also having the child as a dependent also helps a little bit

300 a month here for my son, when our other child that is due this December goes to the same facility, we will get a multi-kid discount and will pay $350 a month total for two.

Maybe - I think he's EE as well. Wouldn't that be a kick in the dick?
Let's just be glad we don't live in the greater NYC area... Oh wait.

Shit's expensive af around here. As much as I like my job, I may truly have to consider moving down south in a few years if I don't get some sick raises.

This is exactly the reason I am going to chain my kids to the radiator with a straight jacket and helmet.
This explains a lot.

Having owned a daycare for a while, barring getting effed by my director , they have a thin profit margin.

The credit is "up to" 35% credit on $3000 for one kid or $6,000 on two. And it goes down a percent for every $1,000 you make over $15,000 to a miminum credit of 20%.

So if you make over $40,000 and you have two kids in daycare, your are getting back $1200. It's not a huge amount.

Once I pass the PE, I'm the hell out of here. It will be something like this "Hey boss, passed the PE. Thanks for signing all my paperwork and reimbursing all the expenses. BTW, I'm giving you my two weeks."
