Thanks Obama, Daycare cost is ridiculous.

I hear a lot of Nordic countries include this already built into your taxes. I imagine for many you're left with more money after being raped on taxes than you might be in the US after having to pay for everything.
Well, it is not free in Sweden, but heavily subsidized. I pay 150 a month for one kid full time, meals included.
I think it is well used tax money to have cheap day care. It should not be too expensive to raise kids.

Remember the good old days when the man went to work and brought home the bacon and the wife took care of the kids and family?

If you do not have a support system when you have kids then prepare to pony up a ton of cash.

How do you create a future generation when you have a bunch of strangers raising you kids?

How many hours a week is she on duty?

That seems... suspiciously cheap.

job is usually for a retiree who wants something to do and not sit at home to be bored to death. they are not in it for the money. just wants company.

Sadly, one income doesn't cover the bills anymore. Adjusted for inflation......we're poorer.

Yup our twins cost us like another mortgage. It's supposed to be more costly than college. I guess at this point, that's a relief going forward.

My friend pays about $1,500 a kid. He has two kids so he pays around $3,000 a month. He's in ATL. I told him to get a live-in nanny. I have two relatives who both use nannies. Both pay less than he does.

Live in Nanny? Be careful!

The only parts of NJ that aren't outrageously expensive, are in east bumblef**k within a stones throw of PA. Ain't nobody wanna live there.

that is the only part of NJ i would ever even remotely consider living in

but probably not even there

Blame the rich Republicans who want to keep wages low and profits high to line their pockets at the working peoples expense. Next time you hear talk of privatizing any New Deal era benefit you'd better run for the hills.

Are you stupid or uninformed?

Maybe you should research corporations and the $$ they give to the parties. Both parties.

lol "blame the rich"...who wants to give illegals the bank, land, education, EBT, citizenship...?

Use your brain, Puff, ...or not.

Use your brain,
Exactly my point. Your boy Trump employs foreigners yet touts he wants to save American jobs. Contradiction anyone? Republicans swear they care about working people yet try to strip them of their worker protections.

Daycare here is $650 for infant, $600 for 1-2 y/o, and $550 for 3-4. I think vpk is around 300 something.

Getting BOT yes paying for child care is expensive as is the cost of raising them in general. When my kids were in school I made enough money so they could have a stay at home mom but inflation wouldn't allow that same income to accomplish as much today. Couples really need to sit down and plan it all out before committing to raising a family to insure that they've got enough resources to cover the costs.

Currently paying $1800 for my toddler. If I have two kids, I'd be paying $3500 a MONTH. That's someone's $50-55K salary before taxes, full time.

And ATOT parents know that this is the norm. My friends pay similar up in Boston, and even down in south- ATL.

The friend of mine in ATL makes similar salary as mine, but the low CoL is amazing. 6 bed, 5 ba house for 650K...AND he still gets to enjoy all the cosmo/trendy/metro scenes the Atlanta offers as a city.
This is insane: i'm paying half that for my kid to go to Montessori school in Portland Or.

No, I don't think most people do remember what things were like 3 generations ago. Where have you been for the past 40 years?

Sadly, one income doesn't cover the bills anymore. Adjusted for inflation......we're poorer.
Careful there, you're likely to branded a communist if you keep talking like that. Or at the very least, a "liberal", and these days, I'm not sure which is supposed to be worse. It gets so confusing.../

I considered a live-in nanny but there a couple of issues. First is my wife didn't want the person living in the house, so that killed that idea. But the other issues are that there is no guarantee the nanny will be good, and even if the nanny is OK, the amount of teaching and socialization usually doesn't compare with a good daycare.

OTOH, there is no guarantee the daycare you choose will be good. Some of the less expensive ones can be bad, esp. if they're not licenced, while the better ones have long waiting lists and not surprisingly are more expensive. Luckily for us we have a daycare at our workplace which is licenced and good. The price isn't cheap, but it's at least a bit cheaper than the private daycares nearby.

In the province of Quebec the daycares are heavily subsidized by the government so that the cost ends up being around $150 per month. However, consequently, they aren't well funded so they are usually rated poor to mediocre, and parents have been known to steal kids' clothing and stuff like that. And there still aren't enough spots open. However, they've recently changed things so that higher income families pay more, up to around $450 a month... albeit for the same mediocre facilities. Thus, some wealthier parents continue to spend 4-digit $ prices for higher quality daycares.

In my province there is no such daycare subsidy, but they've recently introduced all-day kindergarten for 4 year-olds, which essentially means daycare for 4 year-olds but with less supervision. However, there are still problems, since at our local school there is no before and after care, meaning either that you have to get the kid outta there by around 3:30 or whatever, or hire someone to do that. There is a program that buses kids to another school for before and after care but it ends up costing $900 a month to make a kid sit on a bus and travel back and forth so that seems totally pointless.

I hate daycare costs. It's like a mortgage payment. It's the single reason we're only having one.

Thankfully next year my son goes to kindergarten... Not sure what I'll do with all that extra money we won't be spending. We spend right around 250 a week.

It's going to be back to champagne and caviar for us.

Note though that when your son goes to kindergarten, all that extra money could be put toward kid number 2.
