We currently pay $780 a month for 3 days a week. My wife will be working an additional day this fall and our cost will go up to $1040 a month. Though the rate goes down approximately $200 a month once he hits 3. This is in northern Michigan at a daycare/preschool that has a mile long wait list.

We did the math and after the increase of daycare cost, we'll take home about $300 more (after tax) with my wife working 4 extra days a month. hah.

I'm not going to know what to do with myself when we get a injection of $1000+ a month back into our budget once he's in kindergarten.

I feel like I’m getting a deal compared to what some of you are saying.

Our 4 year old has gone to the day care at the local YMCA since he’s been 6mo old. They charge based on 4 days and day 5 is free. They have a 5 room structure: 0-1, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 and 4+. The 4+ room is mainly for overflow or after school preteens. They charge around $185 to $200 a week for the infant room and it scales down to $135 a week for the 4 year old room. Once you get to the 4 year old room all snacks and breakfast are provided. You only provide lunch. During summer all food is provided for 3 year old and up rooms.

Because it’s at the Y you get other things for free as well. Once they turn 3 they get free once a week group swimming with the aquatics lead. They have free gymnastics lessons. Once a week they bring in a music teacher for music and song day. They have a fenced in playground and take the kids on field trips. They work with the kids programs that are at the Y. This means if you want your kid to go to a 4:30pm sports sampler or tumbling for 3-5 year olds, they will take him up and then bring him back to the day care. Finally, they actually treat it like a preschool instead of day care. They have a good focus on learning instead of just being a place for the kids to stay for 6-8 hours a day.

That's exactly what we did until my daughter started school. The YMCA daycare was the best we have used for exactly the reasons you outlined above.

Currently paying $1800 for my toddler. If I have two kids, I'd be paying $3500 a MONTH. That's someone's $50-55K salary before taxes, full time.

And ATOT parents know that this is the norm. My friends pay similar up in Boston, and even down in south- ATL.

The friend of mine in ATL makes similar salary as mine, but the low CoL is amazing. 6 bed, 5 ba house for 650K...AND he still gets to enjoy all the cosmo/trendy/metro scenes the Atlanta offers as a city.

My friend pays about $1,500 a kid. He has two kids so he pays around $3,000 a month. He's in ATL. I told him to get a live-in nanny. I have two relatives who both use nannies. Both pay less than he does.

You obviously have too high of standards. If you look around the convenience stores in your local downtown area you can almost always find a homeless person that will watch your kids for a few frozen burritos a week. That comes up to around $7.50 a week. And as an added bonus you know you are getting your money's worth out of those vaccines that the schools are always making you get the kids.

lol I mean, when you are leaving the company, you should be transitioning all your work to other people. Not continuing on and working OT to finish projects.

And psh, don't act like a typical snob like 50 hours isn't garbage. Unless you make the big bucks and are senior/upper management, working anything over 40-45 means you have too much work, and company should be hiring more people. Que the whole, 'productivity goes down after 8 hours per day', speech.

We have three kids. The youngest two (twins) started school last week. Our daycare costs were $410 ($40 + $185 + $185) a week for the three of them last school year and then summer camp was $330 a week.

There are a few daycares by us that charge $100 a week for the daycare to take them to school and pick them up while someone just hovers around to make sure the kids are not doing anything bad. The school our kids go to offers before and after care. Last year this was $40 a week, and I stayed over night in line from the night before (think Black Friday with tents and stuff) to get one in. This year, I had the week off for another reason and got up there before 6 AM the day before and was first in line. My wife told me I was crazy for it, BUT the first person in line has access to the power outlet. I did not care when the number two person showed up, I did not want to be bored out of my mind like last year.

After waiting in line and getting breaks (mother in law, my mom and then my wife twice) the 26.5 hour wait was worth it. The price went up to $50 a week and then there is a discount for extra kids of $5 for the first and $10 for the second. For waiting 26.5 hours, I get to save $275 a week ($410 - $135) which comes out to $9,900 for the school year. I don't have to worry about a transportation ride my kids would be on from the daycare to the school in the morning or from the school to the daycare in the afternoon.

That boring overnight stay outside of the school may be the best 26.5 hours I used this year. I had nothing to do and planned on doing this already.

The solution is simple. Get rid of all the government regulation (you know, all that pesky bullshit Obama is responsible for) of daycare. I'll bet (a lot of money) there are plenty of unemployed folks out there who just love little kids and would jump at the chance to take great care of your little darlings in a perfectly safe and healthy setting for really low wages or even for free (and probably pay for the snacks out their own pockets to boot. (No, that isn't a double entendre, get your mind out of the sewer.) Just post a couple of Internet ads (even randomly, I'm sure they'll find they'll find the most interested audience PDQ), and I daresay you'll be flooded with applications before you can say "Let's get lunch at Subway!" /problemsolved
