I know there are quite a few past and present U.S. Military personnel on this forum. Right now my friends and family are upstairs in my house really drunk, arguing back and forth about the government and the war, and bitching about paying $3 for a gallon of gas. As I look around the room, it occurs to me that if it were not for those of you who have answered the call, they'd all be arguing in German, or Russian, or being only 30 miles from DC, perhaps we'd all be dead in some terrorist attack.

Your service is much appreciated and will not be forgotten.

Edit -forgot to type Airmen in the summary

This thread is about showing our appreciation for the men and women who have served in the military and helped to maintain the freedoms we have. Lets keep the politics out of this thread. If you want to discuss politics and bash/praise the president, take it to Politics and News.

I agree with jpeyton, and as a Vietnam Vet...thanks, BUT, this holiday is not about recognizing those who served, but rather, those who fell.

While I am against Bush's War in Iraq, I don't let that get in the way of the meaning of Memorial Day. Our fine men & women have fallen in many wars, some for good causes, some not so good, but ALWAYS remember that those men & women were doing their duty as assigned by their government. NONE of them voted to go to war, yet when called, went and served.
All Gave Some, Some Gave All...

He was thanking people for their service to their country. I don't know what country you're from, but you need to get over yourself, let some balls drop (if you have any) and learn some respect.

And I like how you immediately jumped to political conclusions when he's honoring those who've sense. If you're American you deserve a smack on the head for your disrespect you piece of crap.

Thank you to all of our servicemen and servicewomen: veterans of previous conflicts/war, those currently enlisted, and those who have passed on.

I appreciate your service.

Take your politics elsewhere please. I agree with them, but that is not what this thread is about.

I'm thanking my friends, family, neighbors, and countrymen who have served their country over the last 6 decades without regard to whatever the politics were.

I know that Memorial Day is only to honor those who died serving our country, but that doesn't start for 12 minutes. I will of course be paying my respects for the fallen tomorrow as we all should.

Whoa!
Reading this thread, I just put it all together (I've been rather busy lately): Tomorrow is Veterans Day (I'm a Vet), I don't have to work, and.... I'll be 50 years old as it is also my birthday.
My luck, I'll wake up dead!

 Congrats (on the day off, not the last part)! I'm a veteran as well (8 years in the Navy, 26 YO), but I have to work tomorrow. Anyone coming into dispatch will see my ESWS pin that I'm wearing tomorrow. I went to the VA website recently, and they were encouring us vets to wear our medals & pins. I don't think they'd like me wearing all my pins, but I'll wear my ESWS pin.

He is on auto-troll. He craps in every thread he enters. It must be a mental disorder. He doesn't even have enough class to respect the Military Personnel. He is a small person. That is punishment enough.

Thanks to the fallen friends of my grandpa on Iwo Jima, and to all those who died to keep America free.

In Flanders Fields
By John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly.
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

This was the poem written by World War I Colonel John McCrae, a surgeon with Canada 's First Brigade Artillery. It expressed McCrae's grief over the "row on row" of graves of soldiers who had died on Flanders' battlefields, located in a region of western Belgium and northern France. The poem presented a striking image of the bright red flowers blooming among the rows of white crosses and became a rallying cry to all who fought in the First World War. The first printed version of it reportedly was in December 1915, in the British magazine Punch.

McCrae's poem had a huge impact on two women, Anna E. Guerin of France and Georgia native Moina Michael. Both worked hard to initiate the sale of artificial poppies to help orphans and others left destitute by the war. By the time Guerin established the first sale in the U.S., in 1920 with the help of The American Legion, the poppy was well known in the allied countries ? America, Britain, France, Canada, Australia and New Zealand ? as the "Flower of Remembrance."

P.S. It was my honor to serve.
