This is why you get up at 5AM on a weekend to do your laundry, like me! Guarantee there's nobody else in the laundry room.

Heh, I'd rather people just get their clothes when they're done.

I honesly do not understand how you can be that inconsiderate, i've lived my whole life since i moved out(roughly 12 years) in various apartment buildings with communal laundry rooms, i have never once been more than 1 min late to remove from machine, usually i arrive with machine still going because i set my alarm to go off with 3 min left. Everyone has a cell phone, all cell phones have alarms on them, how hard is it to set one and then get your laundry when it goes off, its not rocket science.

Totally agree, but clearly those simple steps are too hard for some people.

The way I see it is that you can't be mad at someone else for taking reasonable steps. In other words, if my load has been done for 15 seconds, I would expect people to wait at least a little to see if I'm going to come get it. If my load has been done for half an hour, that's on me, and I would expect to find it sitting on top of one of the machines.

People who deviate from these behaviors are either too passive (you shouldn't inconvenience yourself excessively when someone else is being inconsiderate), or total douchebags (neither should you try to escalate the situation for petty revenge).

I waited a timed 5 minutes. I have no idea how long the items were sitting there before I arrived, but 5 minutes and one second should be long enough.

I had seen others not wait even 15 seconds, which I think is wrong.

Of course, the last time I had to use a public washer, they did not have the nice digital timers they have now (on many machines). There are little to no excuses for leaving your stuff in a machine when they have a freakin' digital timer!

I remember those days. I never understood why people didn't just bring a book or something. While I was in college, I brought my study materials or a magazine and waited. Now that I have my own place with washing machine, I leave it in there all the time...

I do not fault anyone for not staying with their laundry. Laundry rooms are rarely comfortable (seating, workspace, lighting, temperature) and are never quiet (machines, others customers and, in particular, their kids).

The only fault is failing to plan your return correctly.

Agreed. Especially when we're within an apartment complex; it wouldn't make sense for me to sit in the laundry room when my home is 25 paces away. I just make sure to return at the time indicated on the machine!
