Whoops. Think of it this way, now it's time to try out new musical tastes. I actually erase lots of my music collection every few years. I got rid of almost all my alt rock that I listened to between '02 and '09. Pretty much just listen to rap, jazz, and funk now. Lol. Oh, and some metal.

sucks, as music is the most important thing in my life, I have 3 copies of it, one off-site.

it was a vast collection of lots of different things (hip-hop, rap, jazz, rock, punk, ska, country, folk, oldies..). it needed some culling of the herd, but quite a bit i listened to on a regular basis is probably gone for good. I can rip all my CD's (again) and get that part back, but i cant get back things from the days of file sharing glory.

i had it on 2 drives at one point, and i think i may have it on the media PC too, but that may be a long shot. It may also be on a portable drive i have, but thats MIA... didnt have time to look at lunch. shut down the file server, gonna let the drive cool off. maybe ittl come back long enough to copy off what i want.

I have my music on 3 hard drives. One in my laptop, one in the desktop, and an old desktop drive I threw in an enclosure. A fire or burglary would wipe me out, but not hd fairlure.

This is the exact reason I just uploaded my whole library to Google play.

both of these (except the offsite part, but :hmm: )

all my music is on my pc.

as well as backed up on an external drive.

and then uploaded to google play.

just in case.

Not as bad as losing a few years worth of digital pics. To this day, I have no idea where they went. It wasn't hardware/software failure. Folder must've been deleted by mistake and it wasn't detected in time for recovery. :\

The great thing is you can just go re-down---err I mean...rip them again from your collection of cd's in the closet.

I lost most of my older music because I put them on CD's years ago. The aluminum layer basically degraded over 4 years to the point that none of the discs are readable any longer. I don't trust optical media any more because of this. It's too unreliable.

Now I just do redundant HDD backups, I really should do offsite. I'm hesitant to use google play because they change their products so often, and I have a strange feeling that they would pull the rug from under me and start charging $$ for the service at some point.

Ouch. I lost 3 months worth of pics at one point and am still pretty bitter about it here 8 years later. I can't imagine years worth.

Thanks for the reminder, I'm going to check my backups and make sure everything is backed up properly

Sorry about the loss of data, that sucks.

Ouch that sucks. Especially with the anti piracy industry being so aggressive lately it's going to be much harder to get it back.

I always make sure to have multiple backups of stuff, and once in a while I verify that the jobs are running properly without errors.

I have the important music on at least 2 drives, and much on my phone too. It's all on google play as well. What would REALLY suck is if I lost my video rips. I still have the discs but it just took so much time to get high quality rips of everything. Right now those are just in a 2 drive NAS in mirrored RAID, so in theory I have a backup in case of failure. But if a power surge or something took them both out I'd be screwed.

Happened to me once back in the Napster era when my 10gig harddrive died. Since then I've had backups on CD's and moved on to DVD's. Now my entire music library is backed up on backup harddrive along with the harddrives of desktop, laptop. Most of the music library is also contained on my 64gb microSD card on my note2.

Amazon Cloud is $20/year for 20GB, and mp3's don't count against your 20GB. Get it.

My horror story was back when drives cost a good bit more, and I had a few smallish drives on a freebsd fileserver. The power supply went critical and melted every controller board in the case. I came home to this godawful smell.

I had mirrored drives of my pictures get hosed.. The primary drive got corrupted and every other file became corrupt. It copied the corrupted files to the other drive so I lost half of my stuff. So annoying.
