I've probably done it before, but then again years at an American high school where you're packed in like a sardine shuffling through the doors kind of makes it automatic for me to extend my arm holding the door as I walk out. I agree on this - I hold the door open pretty much everyday for someone if they are close behind, many times I'll wait a few seconds for them. Last week there was a specific incident where I saw someone walking towards the same building as me with 3 cups of coffee in his hands - I slowed down for him and got to the door where I waited a little held it for him, he thanked me and I told him I figured he was going there so I just held it open.

I've seen guys take the extra time to hold the door, but not as much the women, not sure why. It goes back to that difference of how guys will express the problems in situations but women will just keep it within themselves and not talk about it, just letting it build up. *shrug*

I hate to say this, because I don't want to offend present company, but I have noticed that women seem to have a greater sense of entitlement than men. I find rather prominent in the workplace (I'm not even remotely referring to maternity leave; I have no issue with that). They just seem to expect more for less, and seem somewhat paranoid that people are going to forget how important their jobs are.

Not *all* women are like this, of course... it just seems more prevalent in women than men, just like men tend to have a more prevalent case of "Icantshutthefuckupbecauseilovethesoundofmyownvoice-itis".

To be honest this is true for both men and women. I'm considerate enough to open doors/do small things for strangers and I usually get a 50/50 response from both genders. However, when someone is kind to me, I always show me gratitude by saying thanks.

I went to the Microsoft New Beginning thing here recently in Charlotte. My co-worker and I got to the elevator. There was a man in front of us and these two women came in after us. As we got to our floor the guy that was in the elevator first basically stood right in front of the door practically on top of these two women pushing them back against the wall and then kind of rushed out of the elevator. Like they were going to run out of copies of Office 2007 or something if he didn't get there before us. It was sad.

To OP's point, I see a very different mix of men/women do things like this. It's not just women. It's typically more how you're raised I think.

And to the person that said southern women are more polite or some crap on the first page, you must never go outside. I'm from Houston and not only are people in general more hateful and spiteful around here, the vast majority don't take pride in anything that they do. I know working at Wendy's isn't the greatest job in the world, but could you at least try and assemble my sandwich correctly and then not throw it in the bag sideways so that I end up with something that looks like this:

Almost every single time I eat there. It's not just Wendy's and it's not just one location. Customer service and pride in ones work seems to be a few words that are missing from the southern dictionary. My wife, a SC native who has been to Houston a few times completely agrees so it's not just an outsider missing his hometown. Sorry for the small rant, now back to your regulary scheduled thread.

I thought when people say "from the south" they typically mean the southeast.. GA, AL, MS.. etc
