It's a flare in his talking style. I frequently refer to my children as "it" to my wife. It's a joke.

I do agree with loki, though, if nothing changes how we vote, it should be this. This is HUGE.

I clearly stated I don't know what he was inferring but I don't think it was intended to be racial or anything of the like To me he was using it for shock value. Given the point he was trying to make was a BS half-truth (like most debate material) I guess he though he needed to make emphasis on it. That's my guess anyway.

Maybe it's because they've been reading, saying, reiterating pre-conceived campaign sentences for so long, or at least partly. For this reason, the debate was painful to watch. Bill Clinton was the candidate who had melifluous ready English.

I don't know what you were watching - Obama is extraordinarily articulate, and is able to form sentences and even paragraphs incorporating abstract concepts in a planned order meant to enhance their drama, off the top of his head (I'm wary of saying he is truly speaking extemporaneously, since he has clearly been preparing for these debates, but obviously he doesn't know the precise questions to be asked and in many instances framed his answers to respond to answers given by McCain). Clinton might be the ONLY other Presidential candidate in my lifetime who was as naturally skilled (though Reagan was also very effective, for somewhat different reasons).

Obama's centrist-ism is why I've been backing him all along, despite a whole year of FUD about how he's a radical, a marxist, a whatever.

He's not McCain lite though, because McCain, if elected, would be beholden to the extreme right, complete with one of their own as VP. Obama will not be so burdened, with most of his support coming from the center. I won't speak for them, but I assume that's why the lefty fringe element supports Obama despite his Clintonian centrist-ism.
