haha I had something similar happen, but the result when I finally checked was different.

It was 1-2 am and I start hearing the door bell non stop. At first I'm thinking "ok this better stop or my mom will wake up and be mad" (my dad was out of town). After about a minute of it I decide to look outside and see 4 cop cars! I'm like, "ok better go answer that!".

Long story short, the neighbor committed suicide, so they just wanted info (at that point they did not go in yet).

Yes, a handgun or shotgun can be a very good "persuader," but they're not for everyone. If you don't KNOW you can pull the trigger when you need to...you shouldn't have one.
I don't think what most people think of when they think of "Mace" (although it's a brand name, not an actual product) is available for the general public here in Kahleeforneeya, but you can buy "consumer grade" pepper spray.

the GOOD stuff, (tactical grade?) is restricted for sale to police agencies IIRC.

I called the local police department to find out what was legal. He said that it was definitely legal and told me somewhere I could get some. He said that pepper spray, because being made from pepper spray, you could actually spray in your food. haha He was really cool. He said that "mace" wasn't as good as pepper spray because pepper spray works on animals as well.

I agree with this. I recently attended a presentation by the police Lieutenant who oversees patrols in the area where I live. My neighborhood is considered quite safe, but recently we have seen a surge in minor crimes (car theft, vandalism..). His advice was to call the police if we see *any* suspicious activity. If we don't report it, they have no way of knowing it happened, and cannot do anything about it.

He even suggested to call the police when we get a door-to-door salesperson. He said that obviously many of these salespeople are legitimate, but that if *anyone* is going door-to-door, he needs to be checked out. So, for someone like the OP describes, calling the police is a must. The guy that knocked on the OP's door almost certainly moved on to another house!
