I recently upgraded from an i5-3570k system cooled by an Antec Kuhler 920 (in a Refine R4 case)

I had decent temps with that setup. Around 25-28 idle, near 60 when encoding with handbrake, but that was with a very silent custom profile.

The upgrade was to a 5820k and in the process, I swapped over to a Nepton 140XL cooler system. Should be able to keep it nice and cool, right?

To my surprise, when I first got the new system up with the 5820k, I was seeing low-mid 30s idle and up to 70-72 when running handbrake. Of course, the JefFlo fans were screaming.

I thought, well, it is a 130W CPU.

A few weeks passed and it was still bothering me. Perhaps I didn't get a good interface? I remember being a little clumsy when I was mounting the pump.

So, last night I took off the pump to clean and re-apply the paste. When I took off the pump, I almost immediately realized that I made one of the most boneheaded mistakes ever in my near 20 year computer building history. I left the stupid protective film on the bottom of the pump block! Doh! I remember being overly worried about damaging the copper face. Won't happen again.

Bottom line, after reinstalling (without the film), my idle temps went down to 28C (in a 22C room). Load temps are now around 45-49 on a normal profile. I haven't tried Gigabytes silent profile yet. It wasn't too loud at the 'under 50' fan speeds, so I think I'll leave it.

Yeah, the night before last, I was trying to boot to a Parted Magic disc and do a secure erase of an SSD before putting a new image on it with Acronis. Kept rebooting and saying no bootable. Finally after 3-4 times, I realized that I never put the SATA cable on the DVD drive.

Maybe that's where us thermal-interface-obsessives avoid something like that.

I remember when I was starting to lap one of my coolers with 400 wet-or-dry.

And I discovered I'd left the film on the cooler base . . .

My favorite and I do it every third build or so but I get everything finished. So confident in my build I even screw in the side panels (I know terrible idea). Hold my breath and hit power....then keep holding....keep holding... Damn things won't turn on. 9 out of 10 times I immediately check to confirm I have either plugged in the power or flipped the PSU switch which I have not. But maybe twice I have spent the next 30-40 minutes re-scanning every connection or re-seating every device.
