I find the concept actually intriguing and a pretty innovative way to handle things. That being said, the devil is in the details and I have little faith that it's actually going to happen.

An overnig camping trip to Haleakala, the volcano on Maui is reputed to be an amazing star gazing experience. It's still cold up there, but nothing like Antartica.

This seems like a terrible idea. It could have devastating effects to certain wild life and other natural processes that rely on natural darkness cycles. For example some species may actually rely on moon cycles for certain things, we don't know. By having it constantly lit up it would mess up everything. Even us, probably.

The biggest issue would be creating unnecessary light pollution. I like to be able to see the northern lights and stars from my house TYVM.

If they wanted to save $$ on operational cost just install an efficient system and charge batteries in the AM for powering it at night. Much cheaper, proven technology that works and no disruption of natural cycles. This is a horrible idea.

It’s 8x brighter then the moon yet can only provide light for the city of Chengdu?

Maybe they should keep some of those solar fence post lights for them self’s instead of exporting them to Lowes.

They could probably pay their poor people to run on hamster wheels that generate electricity for cheaper.
