It will never work.

A better solution would be supertrains. Or teleportation.

per a friend who works for a state DOT, they want smart cars. apparently a huge amount of traffic capacity is lost at stop lights, because of the delay it takes to get everyone moving at greenlights.

they want semi-smart cars that can fill in the gaps of unused capacity better.

8 - 4. If I could I'd work 7 - 3, but I have an hour drive each way and I think 5:30 is early enough.

i dont understand why some companies wont let people telecommute. my friends said their jobs can easily be done at home. they dont have to come to the office at all.

In addition to the other reasons mentioned from the VPN logs at two places I've worked there is a considerably higher amount of time spent on non-work related internet activities for people who telecommute than work users. (I'm sure this varies by location\company)

While I agree with the sentiment their solution is retarded. Then the new problem will be smart car and dumb cars sharing the road and causing backups when a dumb car hits the brakes and it ripples like a wave through all the smart cars doing exactly the same thing at exactly the same time.

i dont think that ideally, long-term, having dumb cars mixed with smart cars is what would be best anymore than it would be best to still have horses and carts on the roads with any sort of car.

as it turns out, change is often gradual.

and the solution now, where people drive however they want whenever they want, isnt really that amazing most of the time anyways. i hate driving in populated areas. it sucks.

that being said, i didnt get the impression that he expected this to happen in the next couple of years, or for it to be easy. more that it would be a marked improvement and was on their wish list.

Speaking from daily experience, you don't get as much done with all the distractions. The only thing driving you are deadlines but not every task has one so it deters a lot of potential productivity. Not to mention the freedom leading to loss of personal drive - it's a career-killer. If I were a company owner focused on profits and productivity, I'd never consider allowing it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that lack of new roads is what's causing more traffic. I know, i know, it's a wacky idea...

Because of induced demand that really isn't the case for most situations.

For cities with central business districts (Boston, NYC, SF, DC, Chicago, etc) and high land costs investment in transit is more cost effective. Also most people just don't consent to having a 8 lane highway ripped through their neighborhood anymore because somebody thinks it's a good idea.

City centers being designed around the least space-efficient form of transportation is part of the problem. Building more roads is not even remotely the right solution.

Having a work environment like that vs. leaving you to your own home are 2 very different things. Pampered and stimulating vs. left to your own to do whatever whenever. I've never even met my last 2 managers, ever. They're at home halfway across the country too.

A lot of people aren't going places if the existing roads are full. Once you build new roads they start making those trips and fill things up.

I've often kicked around the idea of staggered weekends. If a company offered to let me work Saturday and Sunday and then give me Tuesday and Wednesday off, I'd eat that up. I don't do much on the weekends because I can't stand spending half my time in traffic and the other half in line at the store.

I live in a city and commute to the suburbs. Traffic is never an issue for me. I feel for all those suckers who decided that living so far away from work was a good idea.

My last job had flex scheduling. You had to be in between like 10-2 (for group things) and otherwise as long as you worked 8 hours + 30 minute lunch you were good. Was awesome slip in just before rush hour slip out the same way.. Traffic isn't really bad in Maryland except everything comes to a complete standstill for miles on some roads at particular times...

...Part of the reason I quit my last job. It went from "any time you feel like as long as you get the work done and attend meetings" to "core work hours," which was roughly 8:30 to 4:30 +/- 1 hour. The "any time" system, apparently, had been in place for decades. In the mean time, the city got super congested with little transit development, so joining the main rush = add extra hour to travel time. That tacked on an extra 2 hours to my work day -- same rush after work. Didn't like job anyway, so see ya.
