I think water resistant phones are important, these are expensive devices. I've dropped my phone in the toilet before and of course it didn't work.

It's definitely nice to have, especially for some people. For example I won't let my father get anything that isn't water resistant, because he has a habit of not checking his pockets, etc. before jumping in the pool. He's gone through a few phones that way. He's destroyed so many phones through various means over the course of the years that the phone company stopped selling him insurance.

However, like anything else, water-proofing comes with design trade-offs. Knowing Apple, it would have involved making the device .1 mm thicker and that would have just been unacceptable. That and they need to have another feature to check-off the list at some point in the future so perhaps next year.

I'll probably up to the ip6 and move to the Nexus 6 if its better. T-Mobile jump is great in these situations.

When do they announce the ipads? That new GPU looks to be nice for gaming but I hate gamimg on a phone, now a tablet is another story.

The hand size of the 6 seems fine but not for the screen size you get. Slightly smaller than a lot of the android phones but with only a 4.7 inch screen versus 5+ on the android phones.

This whole NFC thing might make me go back to an iPhone. Google should have had this in the bag, instead they will get to watch how it's done.

Places to actually use nfc is holding it back more than anything else. Apple's thing will help with that which benefits everyone

You do realize Google Wallet has done NFC payments for a long time now, right?

I think they did that a few months ago.

It doesn't sound like it is. It's probably built so that it will stand up to rain or general environmental exposure, but I doubt you can take it swimming.
If it doesn't say water proof or water resistant, no you should not expect it to survive rain.

So, the phones are available on 9/17, but when can we order them? Is it going to be Friday like usual?

I don't know if this was mentioned before, but one interesting thing in the iPhone 6's specs on Apple's page:

FaceTime over cellular uses H.264/H.265
I assume the A8 (or its GPU) has built-in H.265 decoding? I assume it will handshake and determine whether the other device supports H.265, and use it accordingly.

hah, everyone has been saying how the only thing holding apple back has been their phone size.

now they offer a 4.7 and a 5.5 inch version and the same people are still bitching.

it's no win for apple from many people.

(also, not saying you specifically are one of these people - im just saying in general)

Well going big phone and big bezels just looks bad, doesn't matter if it's iOS or Android.

Well since Apple is more mainstream it's going to catch on a lot quicker than Google wallet. I never used it anyway but I have it available. There wasn't much done with it for android devices at least not seamlessly.

based on the pictures in that link, the bezel is a hair larger than both the note4 and the s5. it's hardly "big" compared to those other 2.

Just out of curiosity, when was the last time Apple announced a product that wouldn't be available for several months? That seems like a rather un-Apple like move.

The new phones look OK to me. I'm sure they will be the same great out-of-the-box experience they always are. The watch is a bit of a bummer but I'm still waiting on any company out there to tell me why I actually need one.

Just caught up after having to step out to a meeting. I think I'll let the watch bake a year and just roll with my Pebble.

The bezels are a bit stupid on size in comparison with any other 5.5 inch screen phone out there. Hell the 6+ is bigger than the note 4 which has a 5.7 inch screen.

I thought the whole apple trend was sleek and style trends. This phone is anything but that with those huge bezels.

The reason the iPhone originally was such a hit was the capacitive anti scratch gorilla glass screen originally with a decent phone setup and a decent camera. The styling got better as generations improved with improvements to the camera (which for a while was top notch compared to any other phone camera) and lots of usable applications.

The problem is this 6 release. It's not stylish. It doesn't even have close to the best smart phone camera setup. Google play store has pretty much caught up with itunes in terms of usable smart phone apps. So what does the new iphone bring to customers in terms of innovation and styling? Giant bezels.

Apple always seems to produce new technologies right.

Google goes NFC NFC NFC! and then.....nothing. They expect everyone else to figure it out.

Apple goes NFC and heres how our payment system works. Here is who we already have partnered with. Here is why its better for you. Here is why it will help reduce fraudulent charges.

Again, implementation and follow thru are the most important parts. Not just waving your hands around and saying you have the technology but haven't implemented it anywhere useful.

As for the size, I am on the fence. Everytime I see a note I cringe. The thing is gigantic. Not sure if I want an iPhone that is that size.

Ugh, decisions decisions.

I actually don't have an issue with the regular iPhone 6 size wise - I think for most people it'll be a comfortable size. I think it'll be a bit more comfortable than my work S4 which IMO is fine.

The 5.5 however, with the same bezels, is a little amusing. I really thought they'd mix it up a little bit and it'd be more G3 than Note 4 size-wise. Having the biggest phone among mainstream flagships isn't a spot I thought Apple would be.
