So, the phones are available on 9/17, but when can we order them? Is it going to be Friday like usual?

I don't know if this was mentioned before, but one interesting thing in the iPhone 6's specs on Apple's page:

I assume the A8 (or its GPU) has built-in H.265 decoding? I assume it will handshake and determine whether the other device supports H.265, and use it accordingly.

they said preorder friday

Just out of curiosity, when was the last time Apple announced a product that wouldn't be available for several months? That seems like a rather un-Apple like move.

The new phones look OK to me. I'm sure they will be the same great out-of-the-box experience they always are. The watch is a bit of a bummer but I'm still waiting on any company out there to tell me why I actually need one.

I am pretty sure they did the same thing with the original iphone. Announced in January, released sometime that summer.

Not worth consideration if its still 1GB RAM IMO, already tired of seeing all the stupid Safari reloads and app crashes on iPad mini retina.

Every time they introduce a new product category and want to give the development community time to prepare.

iPhone
iPad

He's talking about the top/bottom bezels.

so am i. sure the ip6+ is larger than the others, i'm not denying that. i'm just saying that it's not "large" by any means if the other ones are considered "small". the note4 or s5 are like 80% or 75% the size of the ip6+ bezel.

Thanks. I was thinking it had been awhile.

As an aside, I have a feeling this accounts for some of the negative movement in the stock following the announcement.

G3 is 146mm x 74mm
6+ is 158mm x 77mm

That's 12mm longer and 3mm wider. The wide part is barely noticeable, but the length is going to make it a pain in the ass to fit into jeans right. the G3 barely fits into my jeans now.

I think the iPads suffer a lot more from memory shortages than the iPhone does. Sure, I have to reload pages from time to time on my iPhone, but it's kind of rare. On the iPad, it may be a bit worse since I'm more prone to leave more tabs open, and use more memory-hogging apps like games. Would I mind more RAM in the iPhone? Of course not (unless it had negative repercussions), but I'm not too worried about it.

When they reveal the iPads in October, I'd like to see more RAM in them. Will the same 1GB be a deal breaker? Mmmm maybe. Although, not including TouchID would be a deal breaker for me just like it was with the first Air.

Cons:
More ram please.
Wireless charging please.
16gb base model on a $700-800 device? Pathetic.
More battery. Use LTE/3G and you've got a couple hours max. I'd take a mm thicker.
The 6 plus is tall!!! Ridiculously tall (to be thin?)

Pros:
Bigger screen (catch up)

More touch (doesn't need the 6).

Not very ground breaking.

kakis are even worse with the G3, I don't know why but some of mine have stupidly shallow pockets

Honestly hardware wise it's nothing special. iOS 8 however is looking nice.

I think the size will be fine. Not sure about ios8 hopefully it's better than 7 by a lot.

Well wireless charging can't happen with a metal unibody.

Otherwise this is my cons.

Cons:
Giant bezels. I know this is because of the Touch ID sensor in the home button, but it didn't need to be THAT large.
Battery on 6 sucks at 1800mhz. Better on the 6+ at 2900, but still below the average.
1 GB memory. Don't open too many tabs on safari like previously or expect crashes. Especially if you want to do some web gaming.
Pricing. Ugh.
Weight. This this is a brick in your pocket.
Camera has not been upgraded really

Pros:
2 screen sizes finally to chose from and decent sizes too. Too bad the 6 is a bit gimped with the lesser resolution though.
NFC for payments seem cool
OIS stabilization for the camera finally, but only for the 6+.
Touch ID improvements
Rounded edges YAY!
Updates to the OS looks nice

Just seems a bit pricey really though for the specs so far.

iOS 8 is what iOS 7 should have been at launch. I'm guessing that because they axed Forstall half-way through development that they had to rush a lot of stuff out and so we got a half-baked experience that was still rough around the edges.

I expect iOS 9 to be where they really hit their stride with the new design after they've had time to refine it for another year.

Even if I wanted an iPhone I could not pay the out of contract price for a 64gb 6+ model. I've been used to the 5.5 inch screen phones now. Only using my m7 now because I sent my oneplus back.

You do realize Google Wallet has done NFC payments for a long time now, right?
Sure, but it was done half-ass. Unless you are a techie, and follow this stuff, no one else knows. You can bet everyone will know you can pay with stuff with your iphone before Xmas. Do you doubt that?

I'm surprised the ip6+ is larger than the Note 3 and 4 even with a smaller screen.

Well the cat is out of the bag finally. Nothing we didn't already speculated. Big bezel, small battery and low RAM are truly disappointing. The one that irks me most is 16gb for flagship price. This basically forces people to "upgrade" by paying at $100 extra. Bad for consumers but nice business move by Apple.

At least OIS is finally available although only on the phablet.

iwatch is hedious though.

Have you actually used it? I have. You tap your phone and that's it (if you haven't opened the Wallet app in a while you'll need to put in a pin). I have all my cards in there, I can switch to whichever I need and pay with it.

I most definitely do doubt that everyone will know, especially considering the two people in my family that have iPhones have no idea how the Notification Center even works.

I wear Haggar Cool 18 khakis, and I can fit the paper cut-out without any problem in my pants. Although, to be clear, that is a side pocket as I never use my back pockets. I already tested the size in my shirt's breast pocket, and it fits (albeit, I don't have a paper case to test it with ) with just a bit sticking out the top.

Weight. This this is a brick in your pocket.

The 5.5" model is only 172 grams, which isn't that much heavier than many other devices in that class:

  • The 5" Nokia Lumia 930 is 167 grams
  • The 5.5" HTC Desire 820 is 155 grams
  • The 5.7" Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is 176 grams
  • The 5.6" Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is 174 grams
  • The 5" HTC One M8 is 160 grams
  • The 5.5" LG G3 is 149 grams
  • The 5.2" Moto X (2nd Gen) is 144 grams
The average of all of those is 162.125 grams, which makes the iPhone 6+ only 6% heavier than the average device of this type. It's about 20% heavier than the new Moto X, which is the lightest of the listed devices. It's certainly on the heavy end of the spectrum, but it's not significantly more heavy than most of the other devices.
