Some have the skill and some do not.

I used to be the type to quickly read a person but that destroys the naturally development and professional development of the people around you.

By reading someone you then will grow tired of them more quickly.

A good example of a professional fluid read although fake because its from a tv show Deep space Nine Season 6 episode 9 - Statistical Probabilities

Good reads do happen in the professional world.
Of course many are psychologists and some push it to its cutting edge and use it for national security to blend in body language, hair style, fashion

How good of a read are you?

I'm pretty good and I agree with you. The more you see, the more that bothers you. It wasn't easy seeing things no one else did. It was very hard to accept people. Once I realized everyone is doing the best they can, and that people are what they are, it became a lot easier.

It's very useful in sales and negotiations.

The ability to read a person allows you to know when to hold back on pushing the sale and perhaps build more rapport and focus more on why the person might need to buy the product.

But I agree it does destroy the natural development of relationship.

Many people aren't as good at this as they think they are. They're good at building ideas of reads that may or may not work well enough for prediction but aren't actual accurate reads of people.

Its a bunch of bs. If people could really truly read people then we wouldnt be voting the way we do. McFrickinObomney wouldnt be the only choice on the ballot. We wouldnt be putting up with half the crap that we do.

Empathy is a human trait and that in of itself gives you insight into other people. Everyone has the ability to read people; it's a matter of how well one is capable of it. How you assume that would somehow conflate to a group function, I don't know. People and persons are entirely different things.

Being brainwashed to vote a certain way has nothing to do with being able to read a man and determine he is a loser.

25% of people IRRC have the gene where they can't read facial expressions at all. I tend to be pretty expressive and will respond to a joke or something with just a smile or a gesture if I'm busy and those types never really understand me very well. Though its not really my fault. They are the types who get angry you didn't say hello even though you just went passed them and smiled after arriving to work.

It's always in context. Everyone has more ability at this than they even know because your subconscious does this automatically, but it doesn't set things in stone, whereas when it's done consciously it can be destructive. Doing it consciously has its pitfalls in terms of the danger of coming to conclusions. A favorite quote of mine is in a movie (great movie, fabulous script!), The Philadelphia Story, in which Katharine Hepburn delivers the line "the time to make up your mind about people is... never!"

Where did you hear about this? Links? I'm incredulous. 25%? A gene?

That might be a study made famous on I think it was 20/20 or 48 hours where some people are just face blind.

A simple test to see if you are face blind is to take a photo of someone or a group photo.

Now turn that photo upside down. Can you still recognise those people without turning your head sideways with no tilt?

More people are face blind than they would really admit to it. To get over the blindness the person makes up for it by relying on the sounds of the persons voice or the way they smell or both.

Reading people is one of the main skills we develop in the poker world, for obvious reasons. It takes a lot of focus, especially when your subject is trying to mislead you.
