I'm afraid of drowning because my brother-in-law almost f'ing drowned me in Lake Tahoe when I was 13 y ears old - it was absolutely horrific.

However, I am also completely petrified of flying, and every small bit of turbulence is taken as a precursor to my plane hurtling to the earth, possibly on fire.

Worst way to die:
I don't remember the name of the movie, but my dad rented this movie about mountain climbing (not cliffhanger w/ Sly) where a brother and sister have to climb to the top of a mountain. There were three people dangling on a rope about to fall down...long story short, the son had to cut the dad loose to drop and die, saving the himself and his sister. To me, that'd be the ultimately long death.

You wouldn't die instantly but it wouldn't be pleasant. Sudden depressurization would be painful, and it would be frickin cold for several seconds until you plummeted to warmer air. You might pass out from hypoxia since you can only stay conscious at that altitude for a few seconds, then wake up as you fell. Pretty sure you would be alive till you reached the ground.

Keel hauling is meant as punishment or torture and is not meant to be fatal.

True...but a punishment which can take a new pair of blue jeans and eat them up has got to hurt...by the way, maybe I'm using the term incorrectly. I am referring to the way my grandfather told me they used to break in their new jeans on the ship...tying a rope to them, throwing them overboard, and dragging them behind the ship.

I thought keel hauling was when they dragged you UNDER the ship...
