The alarm just does not wake me up!

I'm having problems waking up to alarms. I have always been a heavy sleeper and at home I just set my alarm extra early to account for my trouble waking up, because I always eventually do. However now that I'm at college, some problems exist. My roommate and I leave for class at around the same time and for some reason his voice does a good job of waking me up (not even yelling), but I'd rather be independent and wake up on my own. Also he has the frustrating and rather evil habit of unplugging my alarm before I can wake up; which I think he does in a semi-sleep mode himself. Any suggestions guys? Thanks.

I had the same problem. It turns out the alarm clock I was using just wasn't loud enough. I finally bought a new one that has a super loud alarm, no problems anymore.

Get TWO alarms. One is set to start 10-20 seconds after the first. Ringing in stereo usually does the trick although one time when I worked several jobs, I needed 3.

EDIT: Make sure the alarms are not near each other.

I always just set my alarm clock across the room, so I have to GET UP to go turn it off. Most of the time I'll stay up, but if I walk back across and lay down, it's nity nite time again.

But I guess this doesn't really help your 'not hearing' the alarm problem.....

Get an additional alarm clock and set it far away from your first clock. In the morning when you try to hit the snooze button you will have to get up and hit both. After hitting the snooze buttons a couple of times you should be wide awake from all of the moving around you had to do.

Go to Mr. Wakeup.com and sign up. It's free, I usually have around 3 phone calls coming for me before a test, spaced between 5 minutes to 15 minutes apart. If the phone wakes you up easily, go for it!

there's a program that will play the mp3 or cd track of your choice when you want. if your computer is near your bed, try that...(my friend has the program, but they havent sent it to me yet)

I, too, suffer from the "can't get my a$$ out of bed" bug I tried hiding the loud Big Ben alarm clock all over the room, forcing me to get up to turn it off, but seems I can just sleep through it now

I am normally never late for school, but even if I set them 2-3 hours before I have to get up, I never seem to get up till the last minute...Those people who wake-up everyday without an alarm clock and at exactly the same time make me sick

I set one alarm near my bed (gotta roll over and reach pretty far). Then I set my cell phone alarms 5, 10, and 15 minutes past that alarm. The cell phone is in it's charger across the room. I'll usually slap the alarm and hit snooze, but the annoying cell phone beep will almost always get me up on the first try, the rest of the time on the second. Never had to fall back to the third.

Another idea is to just go to bed earlier!

hey, just checked out that Mr. Wake-Up...sounds great!

Does an actual person call you to verify the info, then call during scheduled times? ...like to see if I can schedule it for a couple calls with five minute gaps, but hate to have some poor person listen to my cranky, foul mouth in the morning

I guess I'm not one for much advise ... I'm one of those annoying people that wakes up on my own most of the time before the alarm goes off ... I can't stand the sound of an alarm so I always wake up before I hear it. The only prob is that my fiance is one of those people that has to hit the snooze but 4 or 5 times in the morning before he actually wakes up ... I've gotten used to by now .. but to begin with it was so aggrevating. Good luck with what ever you try.

Man, I'm with you with the waking up hell.

I have an alarm clock that I can set to 3 different times, 1= CD, 2= Beep, 3=Radio.

I usually set #1 and #2 about 5 minutes apart. The going back between Metallica's 'Ain't My Bitch' and BEEP-BEEP-BEEP usually does the trick for me.

Another, more radical, treatment...GET MORE SLEEP!!!

I have the exact same problem, I can sleep through anything. 2 weeks ago on a Sat. morning my wife was running the vacuum cleaner in our room while I was sleeping...you guessed, slept right through it :Q The phone used to wake me up, but I have gotten to the point where I can sleep through it, unless it rings about 20 times. If you find a good system, let me know.

BTW, how do hearing impaired people wake up on time?

Try one of those mechanical wind-up ones with the bells on top. Those can wake the dead.

I have found a little travel clock that wakes me up no matter what. I can sleep through all sorts of things, but that tiny clock just works for some reason.

More sleep never hurt either. If you are well rested and get up at nearly the same time every day, you don't really need an alarm clock. I will wake up before my alarm goes off if I am sleeping well.

The "get more sleep" suggestion has some serious potential; however, I thought that is what hitting snooze for 2 hours achieves? ....trying to get more sleep, but my alarm clock(s) won't let me!

I'm terrible about waking up. I've tried different alarms, using the radio alarm at full volume, multiple alarms. Usually I just end up unconsciously turning them off. I'm not sure how I got this way, I've had this problem since I was a kid. Alarms just don't wake me up.

It's the strangest thing though. For several years after boot camp, even the quietest squeaking noise would make me jump out of bed. In boot camp, the drill seargent would come into the barracks around 20 minutes after we were supposed to be out of bed. Fearing for my life, I guess I learned to listen for that squeak.

I guess you just need to find the noise that does it for you.

lol, I kinda have this same problem. I have this little cheap alarm, but its pretty loud. Most days it'll wake me up, I'll hit snooze once or twice before I get up. However if I say up all night doing homework or something, and only get like 3/4 hours of sleep, it doesn't wake me up. I'll wake up at like 10 and have missed 2 classes and not recall it ever going off, I'll just sleep through it. It does wake my roommate up tho Normaly when our alarms go off we'll hit them before they beep more than twice. But when i sleep through mine it beeeps nonstop for like 5 minutes. I dont hear it but my roommate does and it wakes him up and he gets all pissed .

I've found gettin sleep will do wonders for waking up.

My wife's the same way. She sets two alarms. One by the bed, one across the room. It's entirely inneffective, though. I always have to wake her up to tell her to turn them off. I guess it's the human aspect that seems to work.

I got the same problem...I use my stereo as an alarm..just set the timer to about an hour or two before the actual time I have to wake up. Turn the volume up about 3/4 of the way and I'm set. But I still sleep through it sometimes...wakes me up about 90 percent of the time. People living with me don't really like it though...I usually wake up at around 11 am and they're already up and when the alarm comes on it scares the sh!t outta them.
