I guess many of you guys in the forum are Americans... so maybe you can answer some of my naive questions ...

AMERICAN SPORTS:

Why does American sports teams HAVE to have stupid names: The Wizards, The Dolphins, The Vikings etc....

Why is American sports always about statistics, numbers, averages etc.: His average for this season was... Michael Jordan is no. 4 on the all time top scoring players with 29.277 points... how many yards or feet or hands or whatever measurement you use.... and many many more.... really who gives a damn??!!

Why do American athletes paint themselves in the face to look reeeally fierce, jump around like gorillas in rut (is that the word??) and bang their heads together??

Why do Americans always call their national games for "The World Champion Ship" The World Series" etc. when actually is only in the US... do they think US IS the world??? I don't get it...

Why do Americans talk about revenge and war when terrorists attack World Trace Center and The Pentagon... The US have done the same things to countries like Sudan for decades... those incidents weren't exactly blown out of proportions in the new like this... sure it's awful and terrible... but really... maybe they had it coming. I just wish the buildings had at least been empty... (please don't think I approve of such terrible acts of terrorism - I DON'T!!)

Why do the American basketball team refuse to be tested for doping at the Olymics??? yeah, I wonder.... and why is doping testing lagging so far behind f.x. Europe's...? f.x. the NBL....?? A huge guy weighing 200 kg. is jumping 2 metres in the air... hmmm is that normal?? I wonder... and the NHL!!!!!??

Well, that was just a little vent of all my spite..! maybe I'm just in a bad mood today... but anyway these are things that I have often wondered about... and they are questions I have wished to ask Americans... but please don't take me too seriously... it just fun!! ;-)

PS my sincerest condolences to everybody who lost someone close that awful tuesday

If you had asked your questions without flinging insults at the U.S.A,you would have recieved an intelligent answer.

I'm making an assumption here, but I think the whole "world series" thing came in because some of the teams are from Canada. Which still doesn't make that much sense, could be called North American Series or something.

The names are... I dunno. It's better than calling a football(the American type) team Carolina PooperSkoopers. You may not like the names you see, but one could pick much dumber names. As far as the so called world championships are concerned, I don't know what to say. Baseball? Iffy, but if you could name a country that has more talent and put in as much resource as the U.S. has for the NBA, and the NFL, share with us. You may not like these leagues' egocentric ways, but face it, the other countries don't have the players, do they? I reserve the right to not address all the issues

And yes, I get that you're not really talking about just the sports

Thank!! it was just stuff like that I would like to hear... nothing more... and yes "werk" something i probably rotten in the state of Denmark... I sometimes post stuff like this in Danish threads too... it's fun to provoke people a little sometimes... but not when people don't give intelligent answers and just get angry... ;-)

The face painting is generally a single black stripe under each eye, to cut down on glare from the sun. It's actually functional. The jumping around banging heads together, well, um...

Two reasons, I think: first, statistics give people an objective means of evaluating whether one player is better than another, or has produced more for the team, or whatever; second, in many sports, statistics determines strategy (i.e., who do you send in as a pinch hitter against a particular pitcher? A lefty or righty? What is each pinch hitter's career average against the pitcher? Etc.).

First, it's more dramatic; second, for many sports, the Big Game was named when it actually *was* the world championship for that sport, since the sport wasn't played elsewhere (World Series).

I haven't heard about any of this, so I can't say. When has the U.S. basketball team refused to submit to drug testing? Links? If they *are* refusing, my guess is that it's one of two things: either they're somewhat arrogant because of their fame/money/abilities, or they're on something. I for one wouldn't be surprised in the least if a number of NBA players are on something.
