I?ve always have had this conundrum in my head and I just want to get opinion from others. I?m obviously the scientific type of person. I?m non-religious and highly scientific. I believe science is the truth to everything and is the answer to all of our problems. I also feel people who major in the arts are more/less wasting their lives away. Degrees like English, Art, Psychology (B.S.). People, Mass Comm, Music, Sociology, philosophy. They provide little if any commercial value once one obtains such degree and are not highly regarded by others in the field of academia. Why would you spend thousands of dollars to get such a degree only making scribbles. It seems to me (just from knowledge) that these fields require little if any upper level thinking. Therefore they are easy to get and say you have a degree.

Because those degrees broaden you mind to the world around you. I'm a Software Tester but I got my degee in Social Sciences. While I don't use knowledge I gained from my schooling at work, I do you it quite a bit in life.

You think that way because your a loser nerd that can't appreciate or wrap your mind around anything that doesn't have a solid solution like 2+2=4

I'll bet your friends (if you have any) think you're dry, boring, ovebearing and a bit of a douchebag.

Actually that's not really true now that I think about it. I do use the analytical writing/reading skills that I developed from my time in school at work. Being able to write documentation and break down requirements that are presented by the business is very, very important to my work.

If we didn't have the Arts, like music, theater, etc, the world would be really boring. It would be like playing UT2007, with boxes as people and little dots as the bullets.

IMO there's much more variety and potential for different aspects of thought in the arts, especially things like philosophy, compared to sciences.
And believing science is the answer to everything doesn't prohibit you from thinking about religion. I'm an atheist and currently planning to do my major final year coursework on religion.
Also, I'm not sure what your "upper level thinking" is all about.

Philosophy in my opinion requires a lot of thinking. Besides, I think your belief system is stale and boring.

And that's BS. You try writting a 30 page paper on the Finno-Ugric Epic and Nationalism.

Most of them don't get their degrees for commercial value.

What makes you think that they are not highly regarded in the field of academia? You think that scientists don't appreciate art, music or philosophy?

Writing music is just 'making scribbles' and doesn't require any 'upper level' thinking? Well excuse me. I'd love to hear one of your compositions some time, I'm sure it will be the greatest ever.

You said what i was thinking.

However, OP, perhaps you are too close-minded.
if you said this out loud, in real life, many people would think you are stuck up and rather rude.

I think you should take some time to expereince more than what is in a text book. I feel somewhat sorry for you that you have not lived in a certain aspect or way. There is so much more to life that you are not a part of.

I think most people who get arts degress dont use them to get jobs that apply directly apply to their degree. it seems like they use them more as something to say they finished college, which is quite an accomplishment. for example, i know someone who has a degree in literature, and she does a lot of admin stuff at a church. another guy i know got a degree in humanities, and wants to be a firefighter / EMT. he said that some fire departments simply require or prefer a college degree of any type to become a fire cheif someday.

I agree with the op.

I mean, who are they these limp-wristed artsies trying to fool. Philosophers especially. Pre-Socratics, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Kant, Nietzsche -- like those dudes ever contributed anything meaningful to mankind. A bunch of ivory tower nitwits. Western civilization schmivilization.

I hate music, film, television, and other forms of expression, too. And who needs psychology, either? Bunch of mumbo jumbo. It's all in yo' head!!!

That dohickey that you engineer doesn't get sold unless that communication and/or marketing major does the lip service for it, the artist slaps the pretty picture on the box, and the jouralism person writes the spiffy reviews for it.

Music doesn't require upper level thinking? Try writing something like Beethoven's 9th symphony after going deaf...

Don't think History requires uper level thinking? Write an essay on why World War I started.

Don't think English requires upper level thinking? Try reading a Henry James novel without eating a bullet to ease the pain...
