I am going to get a new computer soon and I need a CD/DVD-ROM drive. This drive seemed to be good by the numbers but i haven't seen many reviews about it or tests that people have done on it.

Here is a link from New Egg

If you could give me any links or personal experiences you have had with it, it would be very helpful, thanks in advance.

I just got one last friday it seems pretty loud to me and it wont read one of my cd's (Asherson Call 2: Legions) but it is very fast and does read everything else I have tried so it might just be the cd. The problem might have been my fault anyway since I was messing with the firmware.

Yeah. I got one too. A little noisey, but other wise OK. The tray makes a lot noise when opening and closing too, but that tends to fade a bit once it's broken in. I believe this DVD-ROM is actually made by Pioneer. It is ATA-100 compliant, but that doesn't mean squat as far as real world performance goes.

I've had some bad experiences with Pioneer drives so I replaced this recently with a Sony (repackaged Lite-On). Although I never had any major problems with it, I just wasn't comfortable keeping it in my primary box which is used quite a bit for movie watching.

it's a good drive, mine was actually rather quiet. if you want best performing rom for reading DL media, dvdr etc. you pretty much have to go with either aopen dvd-1648 aap/pro or nec nd3500ag (which is no longer made)

there is no such thing is the best reader. if you want the fastest it's been proven time and time again that the aopen is the fastest reader overall on a variety of different kinds of media. it is noisy though.

there's a benq dvdrw drive thats faster than the aopen but only when reading DL media. the answer to the question will depend largely on what your prerequisites are. if you're only going to read pressed CDs and DVDs any modern dvdrom will be fine. If you want a good overall reader but require quietness of operation the thoshiba or the asus will do very well. but if you want the fastest then go with the aopen.
