I doubt that a tablet is required. I imagine it's just a chance to get EA inside people's tablets.

While I think that functionality is interesting, I don't think that came from the Dev side. That seems like marketing getting involved directly and pushing for something beyond just the PC.

I already have Battlelog installed on my Ipad.

i don't really like the idea of commander playing from ipad -.-

i was really impressed by destruction and all, specially when they destroyed pillar to collapse road, but i was also laughing at tanks and heli... director told them not to kill main squad go and stand there so that they can destroy pillar and u fall down, tanks just make a group and stand there so that all 3 can get hit by missile and best part was heli please hover and get hit by rpgs

yeah yeah i know they were just trying to show us improvements, destructions and all.

can't w8 4 beta

Actually, one of the biggest complaints about commander mode in BF2 was that it took that player out of the game. Calling up the commander control panel basically forced the commander to hide in a corner of the map.

I think the use of an external device is brilliant. Assuming it works on any external pad-like product, including smartphones, I'd wager that just about everyone playing BF4 will have access to one.

I say bring it on...this is the future of war!

Im pretty sure he mentioned smartphones in the video.

I can only imagine some of the "commanders" we will see in game, should be hilarious. (unless you are actually stuck with one)

Also, if they don't put in destroyable assets, there is no point to adding commander mode.

Whats the point if you can't counter their commander.

Never played BF2 but I've never felt like Commander mode was missing since then just from what I've heard/read about it personally. I feel like it has a moderate upside at best.

Also the less bullshit remote artillery/mortar crap, the better imo.

It's awesome that you can do commander from your tablet/smartphone!

Just how are they determining who gets to take the commander role though ? Somehow I am expecting it to be something you queue for in battlelog and then get dumped into the first game with the commander position open...

This may sound stupid and maybe I missed something in the video. But I almost go the impression that commander is going to be something for somebody to do when they're NOT playing bf4 on their computer. Like the girl in the video. waiting and being bored. Oh let me fire up my bf4 app and play some commander while I wait.

Yes, but that isn't such a bad thing. A lot of games showcased at E3 had a tablet / mobile interaction.

My impression of the commander mode video overview is this.

PC:
Infantry or can head into Commander Mode (mouse driven)

Tablet (mobile?):
Commander Mode only (touch driven)

Points captured or commander exp will allow for different deployments in the map like armoured fury with the AC-130

I imagine people will be playing commander in snoozefest meetings at work. LOL

Wouldnt the commander need to be in constant voice communication with his team? How would that work with a tablet? I can just see some guy in an airport being dragged away by the TSA for interrogation after being overheard playing BF4. ROFL

Scripted is right, you'll never see a bunch of pub players play like that.

...

heh, in a pub, the first to get to the elevator would have taken it up leaving the rest of the squad twiddling their thumbs in the lobby. :'(

There is a lot of truth to this. I can really see myself calling in artillery strikes while I'm about to doze off in a weekly status meeting.

I can see your point if you never played BF2. But coming from a BF2 fanboy like myself, I feel like Commander mode was a big part of what was missing in BF3. Commander mode as it was in BF2 added a new dynamic to the game. If you had a good commander that could lead the squads around the map and could drop artillery on annoying, camping tanks, you had the upper hand. I feel like BF3 always lacked the team play aspect that was so much fun in BF2. I'm a little confused by the new tablet interface and how that would work but I'm interested to hear more about it.

WTF was that bit with the tablet? was that ingame or out of game

You can play commander from a TABLET. I wouldn't do it, but that is true to life awesome! If they incorporate e-sports features, then this is will be the best BF by a long shot.

I never missed the Commander mode, possibly because if I wasn't the commander I hate it. I played mostly solo, as all my friends were console gamers. So, my commanders always sucked. =(

Nice, they finally have a long stretch of gameplay.

Looks like they have a fully functional spectator mode that they are using for the broadcast.

Watching some of that stream. The game looks excellent. Loving the boat in the canal firing on infantry.
