The beta is showing up in my Origin but is "not released yet". That timeline also gives them a little time to work on a patch for release day. I am surprised they didn't do the beta much sooner. It is like they are only doing it for the fans and not to actually find bugs.

The time line is more marketing than beta testing, but there will be a day 1 patch as a result...

People treating betas as free trials rather than "beta" has really kind of undermined their usefulness anyway. Very poor signal to noise ratio

Battlefieldo - Prepare for Camo

In Battlefield 3, we started to see a few limited options for adding camo to weapons and customizing your soldiers. Those of you who have followed gamescom 2013 for the last week have probably heard a good deal of marvel at the number of weapon and vehicle camos that will be available in Battlefield 4.

I happen to be a big fan of customization--as long as it doesn't go too far (this is a military shooter after all)! That said, I think it's awesome that we're going to have so many choices for customization on the Battlefield. Below is a summation of the camo classes and patterns that will be available for weapons and vehicles at launch. Keep in mind that the developers have hinted that we'll get access to other goodies later, possibly in Expansion Packs or Battlepacks. For now, let the fun begin with these!

Viewing the screenshots below this article, it's evident that there will be 8 classes of camouflage to choose from. There were several mentions alluding to 8 classes during some of the streams as well. The 8 available classes are as follows:

ADAPTIVE
AUTUMN
DESERT
NAVAL
SNOW
URBAN
WOODLAND
MISC

The top 7 classes listed above (Adaptive, Autumn, Desert, Naval, Snow, Urban, and Woodland) all seem to have color variations of the following patterns:

ATOMIC
DIGITAL
DOT
ERDL
FLAT
FLECKTARN
GRASS
HEXAGON
PALM
REED
SPLINTER
SPRAY
STARBURST
TIGER
TURTLE
WORM

Additionally, the Miscellaneous class seems to add some unique color variations to the patterns listed above. You may have spotted a few of these in the live stream, such as "Eastern Turtle" and "Firefighter", which seemed to be fairly popular.

Remember that camo can be applied to both your weapons and vehicles, and that you'll be able to create customized emblems as well. Also, there appear to be different camo choices for soldier customization, so that will be covered separately. What does everyone think about the level of customization in Battlefield 4? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!

Battlefieldo - Levolution: Making the Battlefield a Whole New World

LEVOLUTION. The term has been spoken over and over. Our favorite game has been Levolutionized. We don't destroy stuff anymore, we Levolute it instead (hey, it's a verb)! We've seen and heard Levolution described in at least a dozen different ways since Battlefield 4 was announced. So what is it?

Allow me to break it down into its simplest form: Levolution can be defined as "anything that changes the level you're playing on." All of these fancy descriptions really just come down to that. It just seems bigger when you think about all of the awesome ways this can happen during game play, which is probably why everyone involved with this game in any way is so excited by the concept. Because it hasn't simply changed game play, but has further set this game apart from any other in the genre.

Let's take a look at the ways Levolution has been shown to affect Battlefield 4 so far.

Many of the game changing experiences can be triggered by the player. Just be careful, because in Mother Russia, Levolution destructs you! In all seriousness, some of these events may be worth fighting for, while some may be worth fighting against. Gamers may want to cause these events in order to gain an advantage on the Battlefield. Or , let's face it, sometimes we all have fun making something really cool happen. Other times, such episodes may really screw up your strategy. Either way, here's a list of the things we've learned so far that players can have some control over:

  • Birds may fly out of the bushes you're sneaking around
  • Players can set off car alarms
  • Metal detectors can go off
  • Players can activate bollards to control vehicle access
  • Shutters can be lowered to block off an area
  • Train doors can be closed to trap enemies
  • Lights can be turned off in some buildings, enveloping players in darkness
  • An elevator can be used to reach the top of a skyscraper, opening a new area
  • Bridges can be destroyed, making vehicle access to some areas more challenging
  • On a larger scale, events can be triggered by destruction. it to a whole new level:
Those of us familiar with the Battlefield series are used to destruction, but Levolution takes akes it to a whole new level:
  • Support beams can be destroyed to collapse the street above
  • A levee on an urban map can be blown to flood an entire city
  • A huge skyscraper can be brought crumbling down on Siege of Shanghai
  • A damaged destroyer can be freed on Paracel by destroying the windmill it's caught on
  • In another map, players will battle to either start or stop a countdown for a warhead
  • Falling trees will cause damage to vehicles and players
  • The trailer below shows some of the above. It also hints at even more destruction, with falling power lines and more rolling boulders than an Indiana Jones movie:
Battlefield 4: Official Levolution Features Video

Video

Finally, the dynamic weather changes we've already seen alter the lighting in the map, plus create wind effects that add excitement to the environment. But beyond that, lightning caused by the storm strikes the aforementioned windmill, eventually freeing the destroyer for us. Also in Paracel Storm, we've seen the effect that this inclement weather has on the seascape. Large waves add a new element to naval battles, or, as I like to call them, frog fights. You may be fighting against your enemies, while nature fights against you. Or, you may learn to use the waves to your advantage, catching big air or using them to cover your escape. Either way, this form of Levolution is a big change from what we're used to.

I can't wait to see more of the amazing examples of this concept that the developers have in store for us, and I get the feeling that they're as excited as I am to show us!

I'm guessing launch day will suck but the game will be a blast. And I agree that betas are now more of a trial than a beta like they were back in the day.

Those 25mm cannons look pretty awesome but I don't know if it's much of a buff rather than just a second option for weaponry. The current scout helicopters already chew up infantry and light armored vehicles without it.

They're still very badass though.

the water is awesome. holy crap

Okay.. I might bite on this.. had fun with you guys when BF3 launched. All I need to know is, am I going to need any upgrades from my i5 2400 and 1GB 6850 (1650x1080)? I am sure I can search but I feel lazy today!

It would be great to get back in the ring with you, Greg! You might want more in the GPU department for BF4, although it probably won't need a lot more firepower than BF3. I assume you're able to play on High at 50fps or so at your resolution. BF4 will probably drop that a bit, but will still be playable at medium settings, most likely. BTW, your CPU is definitely fine.

If you pick up an AMD video card now, you will almost certainly be able to use the free game vouchers it comes with to get BF4 for free. That's worth $50 right there. HD7950s dropped to $200 last week but those deals are gone. Still some good ones to be had in the $220-240 range. Or you can go whole hog and pickup a 7970 for $300. Expect the new AMD GPUs releasing in late-Sept. to be WAY more expensive. The lowest I'd go is the HD7870 for around $170 - the HD7850 isn't enough of an upgrade.

Does anyone know if the 10 release maps are 10 *new maps* or does that include the legacy maps from BF3?

Videogameter.com - Battlefield 4 on PS4 & Xbox One – 'We need to compromise in some places,' says DICE

But the difference between PC and next-gen versions "won't be night and day", developer assures.

The PC version of Battlefield 4 will look better than the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, executive producer Patrick Bach has suggested, telling VideoGamer.com that DICE is "doing as much as [it] can" with the next-gen versions, "but we need to compromise in some places".

Discussing the differences between the PC and next-gen versions of Battlefield 4, Bach said that "from a CPU/GPU perspective, no, [PS4 & Xbox One cannot match PC].

"PC will always be... You can just add more to a PC. There's always more. The game supports to a big extent better hardware, but not completely, so it won't be night and day."

The PS4 demo of Battlefield 4 on display at Gamescom last week appeared to be somewhat lacking in comparison to previous PC demos, with IGN calling the visuals "soft and muddled" and outfitted with wall textures that "looked half-finished, lacking some of the smaller material nuances or 3D variation".

Battlefield 4 screenshot
Whether the final game will look as good on next-gen consoles as the 'Fishing in Baku' footage shown during the initial reveal still isn't certain, however.

"I try to remember what it looked like back then," Bach adds. "To me it's back then! It has come a long way. This is why I'm not completely sure on how to answer the question, because some people might not see the difference. When they look at it, [they'll say,] 'Yes, it looks exactly the same.' To me, I will see the difference because there are so many levels of fidelity that is for some people hard to spot. The experience will be very, very similar, but then what it is might not be the same."

Asked whether he was happy with the final system specs of PS4 and Xbox One, Bach said: "I'm never happy. I always feel like there's more that we can do [and] there's always more that other people could do."

But does he wish they offered more?

"Of course I do. I want PCs to be twice as fast as well. I think [PS4 & Xbox One] will do what they are supposed to do. They will move console gaming farther. It will take console gaming into a new generation. Then the question is, could they have done more? Yes. Would it cost the same? No. It would be twice the price. Would that be a reasonable thing to sell to consumers? Probably not.

"But then again, there's always a balance, and the same for us. There's always a balance. 'You should have done more with Battlefield 4.' It's like, well, we do as much as we can but we need to compromise in some places, and in other places we don't compromise at all, and you think we should have done the opposite. Sorry, that's our creative choice. I think that both Microsoft and Sony, they probably have very clever people finding the right balance where you get the most bang for the right buck. And I think looking at that and looking at from what I understand when it comes to pricing that they are hitting a very good target."

Battlefield 4 screenshot
Despite the differences between the PC and PS4/Xbox One versions, though, Bach believes that the next-gen release of Battlefield 4 marks an exciting milestone for the series.

"I think the cool thing that we are extremely excited about is that you will, for the first time, get a full Battlefield experience on a console," he adds. "It's the same core, it's the same game, it's the same feature set, there's nothing left out, so to speak. But there's also the 64 players, 60FPS experience that you haven't really seen on a console previously which will move it up a big notch and eliminate some of the gap between PC and console.

"Then it's more of a question on graphical fidelity, graphical detail and stuff like that. But then on the other hand, [PS4 & Xbox One] have some cool features that [benefit] it being a console game. You know, how Battlelog is integrated into the game in a much better way, you have the second screen features, you have the whole friends network which is super nifty on the consoles, and stuff like that."

Battlefield 4 launches on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on November 1, with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions expected to follow at each console's launch.

Long live PC gaming. So, over two months to go. Good god. I'm going to find a noob server tonight and rape the daylights out of them from a tower or something.

There's been quite a few level 1's around on my favorite servers. Kind of irks me when I get killed by them, just because they are always bumrushing so carelessly.

BF3 is starting to feel stale now with the launch of BF4 getting so close. The Paracel gameplay videos look so good

If you are from Europe, feel free to share them with me. I barely play at all last two months, but when I do, I get my ass kicked so hard I cry like emo emu.

Got my hands on some BF4 today at a convention

I like how they put the SCAR-H to a DMR category. The map they had it in was just a small conquest map on Paracel Storm. Most of the people were really bad or were fillers told to play badly. The team I was on were a bit stacked and won with over 280 tickets.

The new movement animations are a nice touch, open freight containers are able to be closed. Everything looks a lot sharper on PC. Almost like how BF3 was way sharper than BC2. Suppression isn't as bad as BF3. Spotting feels a bit odd, you need to really stop everything and let the animation go through to spot.

I can't wait for launch
