Before I upgraded last week, that's the card I was running and the resolution I was running at. I was actually able to get over 50fps when I manually switched over to DX9 in the systems.ini file. In the default DX10, I could only comfortably run at 1680x1050/medium settings. Frankly, there's no reason your brother can't just switch to that resolution on his 1920x1200 monitor. You don't have to run the game at native resolution for it to look good.

Also, don't forget that this game is highly dependent on the CPU. With his older E2180 dual core, he will likely drop below 30fps regardless of the video card: http://www.legionhardware.com/articles_pages/battlefield_bad_company_2_tuning_guide,3.html♦. Low settings may save his rig, but they really don't look too good. Trust me, it won't make a difference if he's 1920x1200 or 1280x1024 when he's at low settings.

Is low quality really that bad for you? Yea, I'll definitely tell him to force the game to run in DX9. Honestly, can you really tell the difference in quality in a fast pace FPS? I hate running games on an LCD at non-native resolution. I don't think he would appreciate it either.

Stupid question, but is anyone here running BF:BC2 with a 512MB Geforce 9800GT at 1920x1200 over 30FPS with low details? My brother's birthday is coming up and I want to buy him this game. Unfortunately his videocard is a bit old and he does have a high resolution display (1920x1200). If he turns down the details (no AA and AF), will he get an average of 30 FPS or more?

I'm running a 8800GT at 1920x1200 at med settings and get 50+ fps. Setting DX=9 made all the difference.

yes, like someone else pointed out...I believe you can shoot through the windshield with about any weapon...I know I have been shot out of the pilots seat...just kind of luck I guess...leading the chopper enough.

I got at least 2 that I can remember of sniper shots on a chopper on the pilot...both were pretty elementary as they were hovering...but it is cool none the less watching the chopper crash and burn!

That is definitely the best part. There's a map, I can't recall the name, but when you are defending the island, the attackers get two passenger choppers, and i'll sit on the small island, before everyone spawns, and wait for them to enter the chopper, and shot the pilot, over, and over, and over again. Then i'll drop mortar on the other chopper, and keep doing it...I went 24-0 one round last night, before they finally got me...I ran out of ammo

clarification for everyone, DX9 runs 5-10 FPS better then DX10 ... not sure what the visual difference is, but DX9 makes a difference when it comes to FPS.

My stats are pretty low ... I was running into suicide zones so my little brother could res me, and he'd do the same, and we'd go back and forth ... really fuxed my K/D ... didn't really help with stats all that much either.

Cross post but people here would be interested too - the R7 patch notes:

Update R7 Changelist:

- Several common crash fixes. Especially those which have monitoring scripts that rely on the Remote Admin interface should see stability improvements.

- PunkBuster can send commands to Remote Admin interface. pb_sv_task 0 -1 now works

- Veteran-rank handling corrected

- Switched back to Release version of the low-level networking library; less debug output but higher performance

- Increased the initial server reconnection interval to 30+rand(30) seconds

- PB GUID generation is now based on EA account IDs (it used to be based on persona names)

Isla Inocentes I believe - through a freak of statistical randomization I ended up playing that map for 3 of my 5 rounds last night. Not very happy about BC2 letting this kind of shenanigans happen though. The initial, round-start spawn should be a safe area IMO. Soooo not fun waiting for 15 seconds to spawn, spawning in the back so you can gather your squad/marshal your forces, and getting headshot 1.5 seconds after you spawn, before you've taken one step.

Not blaming you Vivi, if the game lets you do it, do it (though I don't think I'd do it myself); blaming the game for not protecting the initial spawn from across-the-map sniper fire.

Oh, and was it on purpose for DICE to take the stationary mounted MGs from the Beta and slap an iron patch over the view slit so that your crosshair is pointing at a spot behind it so you can't see what you're pointing at? Or is that some kind of graphical bug/anomaly that they just haven't fixed yet? Seriously, those things are beyond useless now.

To put the exclamation point on JSchmuck2's update on the new server version release:

Source
We have just distributed a new server version named R7 to the server hosts.

Early signs from the hosts are good with 20% less load on the server CPU, improved hit detection, Veteran rank handling is fixed so you should get your M1 Garand back now plus some other fixes to better help the server hosting companies and better management of Punkbuster ID's.

To be more precise, I believe it is only when running in DX9. It's probably a feature paid for by ATI/AMD.

I run DX9, and I shot through those stationary MG's no problemo...260GTX 216 core.

Correct, it was Isla Inocentes, I spawn usually 15-20 seconds before most people...so it gives me time to run out there. It's unfair, but man does it get adreneline pumping when you see 6-7 EASY shots, and you have to wait for a darn reload! Send an arty, and get an easy multi kill ... it's fun as heck, haha.

Hooray! Mah stats are up!

Probably at least 15 of those kills were me from last night when you were running around with that Recon/G3 setup. I tried to counter with my own G3 but I cant hit sh*t with it at anything farther than 20m. When I use the iron sights they get in the way. I wish there was a scope or red dot for it so you can see a little bit around what you are aiming at. I dont know how many times I saw you from a distance, but couldnt get you, so I'd move up, turn a corner and you would unload.

Has anyone figured out how to counter mortar spam yet? I was defending, and the attackers had at least five or six snipers constantly dropping mortar strikes. Eventually the building would fall and they take the base. I tried to go recon to snipe the campers, but its incredibly hard when they only need to have line of sight for a few seconds to call the strike. Then I tried playing aggressive defense and got sniped trying to move up. Granted not all of the mcom stations are in buildings, but without FF, they would rain mortars while their own team runs through the explosions like rambo. I raged...

Is it some setting that you need to set to Medium/Low or something? Any idea what it is? Textures maybe?

I'm also running DX9 (WinXP) on the same GTX260 Core 216, and I didn't have this problem in the Beta, only in Retail. I'll be going to DX11 when I get Win7 installed, probably next week.

I tried DX10, and DX11 ... I have a 260GTX 216 core, Q9550, and DX9 is the only one that runs well.

That's because you run an Nvidia card, and for whatever reason people with Nvidia cards render the maps quicker and you get a headstart.

This unlocking of items is kind of BS. I could understand if they did it like TF2, where the stuff you unlock isn't necessarily better than your starting stuff, just different. But in BC2 veterans of the game have FAR better gear than you do. It's hard enough starting a new FPS and going through the period of being a n00b, but artificially putting n00bs at even more of a disadvantage is bs.

Yeah, this is one thing I hate about shooters these days. If you dont get it release day you have a hard time getting up to speed, not because of skill, but because people who played it longer have better stuff. Its kind of counter intuitive...by design the more experience you have with the game it gets easier and easier. BY DESIGN, not due to skill. People who play longer will naturally be better due to repetition, but then its reinforced by rewarding them with better gear. In BC2, unless your are recon or medic, the basic equipment doesnt hold up to all the other weapons in the game. Problem with medic is you dont even get the med kit or defib for awhile.
