5770's, performance seems inconsistent these days. I dunno if something is wrong with my system or this is how it should function. Curiously enough the new maps perform the best, I can quite often see 100fps or greater. I think this is because they don't have the 'blowing' effects.

ive been having problems recently on my 5770 as well, it just seems laggy when explosions go off.

Well that's the risk you took buying XFire cards. I will never go dual card/gpu. I'll always spend more money for single card.

good price if you want to save a few bucks and not get to play on the 18th, as with the $15 steam purchase.

An old subject, revisited: Purchasing BC2 Vietnam on Steam vs non-Steam

Posted 14-Dec-2010
by Kalms, DICE

There seems to be some confusion regarding purchasing Vietnam. I hope this clears things up.

Any stores that "sell BC2 Vietnam", sell a 16-digit code. This code can be entered into the BC2 game client - any version of the game client. Entering this code unlocks Vietnam for that EA account. No additional download is necessary.

Here are some typical scenarios:

You have bought the base game on Steam, and Vietnam on Steam - this works. You will also see your purchase of Vietnam listed in your Steam client.

You have bought the base game on Steam, and Vietnam somewhere else - this works. The Vietnam expansion will not be visible in the Steam client, but you can access it in-game.

You have bought the base game somewhere else, and Vietnam somewhere else - this works.

You have bought the base game somewhere else, and Vietnam on Steam - this is not possible, because Steam will not sell Vietnam to someone who does not have the base game on Steam.
If you somehow did manage to make such a purchase anyway, please contact Steam support.

You have bought the base game on Steam, and someone has gifted you Vietnam on Steam - this works. You will also see Vietnam listed in your Steam client.

You have bought the base game somewhere else, and someone has gifted you Vietnam on Steam - well... Long story. The gifting will succeed. Steam will know that you have Vietnam, but you will not see it in the Steam client because you do not have the base game. Therefore you will not be able to view the 16-digit code for Vietnam. Contact Steam support to resolve this.

We have been in contact with Steam, and their support department is aware of the above.

The "Vietnam" menu in BC2 will say 'go buy the expansion' until Dec 18th. (It will still say so after you have bought the expansion.) After the 18th, the dialog will change to one where you are asked to enter your code.

It turns out I didn't even have Windows Defender running, because Microsoft Security Essentials automatically disables it. And I just played with MSE disabled...glitched within 5 minutes. Maybe this weekend I'll try swapping in my GTX460 to see if it's my HD5850/drivers causing the problem.

Happy to report that I had my first-glitch free gaming session in a while. I uninstalled and reinstalled BC2 on a hunch, and sure enough, it worked out. Had some good times with Bill Brasky (aka Zaitsev). Now I'm going to go ahead and pre-order Vietnam - I was dreading having to deal with the freezes with a "new game."

By the way, I discovered something interesting in my testing...I installed BC2 on my HTPC and played with no problem, using my GTX460. What was amazing was that I'm pretty much CPU-limited to 40fps (about 60% of what I'd get with equal settings on my gaming rig, despite GPUs that should be much closer than that). That's all my HTPC's e8400 could push, with my 460 sitting at 60% utilization. It's quite the opposite on my gaming PC - my 5850 is always pegged at 100% and my CPU rarely goes above 50% (with one core pegged at 100%).

Moral of the story: this is definitely the kind of game where you absolutely need a quad-core to take advantage of the latest GPUs. I never intended to game like that on my HTPC - was just testing to see if it was my internet connection that was glitchy. I'm sure if I stuffed my HD5850 in there, I wouldn't get any higher FPS (but could push higher levels of AA). For all you BC2 fans out there - make sure to keep your systems balanced. If you have an older CPU, you can still play the game, just don't buy a GTX580 looking for higher fps.

actually, nvidia is still working on optimizing their drivers for this game. the last update gave us some GPU usage increase and they promised even more in the next driver update.

Very interesting - so you're saying it wasn't my CPU limiting the GTX460, it was nVidia's drivers? This would indicate that there's a lot of performance left in the tank (given that I was at 60% usage).

I believe you have the same card, right?
