frankly, i think there are good things from both modes and my ideal mode would be a mix & match of the two modes.
these settings would make me happy:

Health: 75% (right in between normal and HC)
Killcam: Off
Health Regen: On, but 1/2 the speed of normal
Minimap: Yes
Friendly fire: On (as much as i hate TKs, it's stupid to have people lobbing nades everywhere and firing rockets without being worried about FF. they should make TKs not count as deaths like in black ops)
Crosshairs: Infantry weapons-no crosshairs, but stationary emplacements and certain vehicles like blackhawk miniguns-yes.
Squadcam (for spawning): most HC servers don't have functional squadcam for spawning, but this is something that should always be functional.
Spotting: mini-map only, no 3D markers (aka red triangle)

Anybody else having problems staying connected to servers?

I'm able to join servers fine, but I keep getting disconnected after 30 seconds or so. On the few times I managed to stay in game, the game was laggy as hell.

Yea it's stupid f'n EA. After all this time they still haven't gotten the servers right. It's ridiculous.

yea i've started to play normal mode again, hc was fun for awhile but it came down to whoever saw who first won 90% of the time.

it does seem to be a sniper fest right now, but that doesn't bother me at all, instead of helping their team complete the objectives, they hide in a corner of the map, which is 1 less person you have to deal with while blowing up an mcom or capping a point

And I prefer games that are not camp fests and fights that actually feel like a fight and not whoever landed the first punch.

Any noob can point and click, but can they retain their aim on a tough/moving target and maintain the steady bursts of fire required to finish the kill while under heavy pressure? IME, no they cannot, just like in real life (heck, burst rifles were invented because of the average soldier's tendency to hold the trigger down and not properly burst or semi auto on their own).

If a player has excellent aim and reaction times but cannot sustain that skill over a period of time that's fine, there's always HC mode.

yup, nub friendly, just like the ability to kill targets faster instead of having to maintain aim discipline, that argument can go both ways

I couldn't have said it better myself.
These are the basic reasons a lot of BF2 veterans are less than enamored with BFBC2. There are just tons more ways to kill your opponent where they have no chance of escaping or retaliation. All of the leet skill in the world is for naught if you are the one spotted first.

im getting CTD's again

but about half the time, when I drop to the desktop steam is crashing too

as for HC/non HC

I play HC unless someone on my friends list in in a reg gamem then I pop over

I HATE putting a mag into someone from behind only to have them turn around and pop me

esp when I get a head shot ding, which means I start to move along to the next person and bam I get killed because a headshot doesnt kill with all weapons in reg

yea i've started to play normal mode again, hc was fun for awhile but it came down to whoever saw who first won 90% of the time.

damn, its like, almost realistic......

Can believe nobody mentioned this yet:

Apparently the radios/music in Vietnam is off be default. You need to make an .ini file change to turn it on:

You need to go to My Documents > BFBC2

Open gamesettings.ini in notepad

Change the carradio field to "1" instead of "0"

New Battlefield Blog Post: DICE devs answer your questions on Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam

* BY: zh1nt0
* POSTED : Dec 20, 2010, 12:00AM

Wow, what an evening!

On December 15th, we invited all of our fans to join a live chat about Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam with the dev team here at DICE. The event started at 21 CET on EA.COM and went on for 90 minutes (we stayed half an hour over time to answer as many of your questions as possible).

We would like to thank everyone who took their time to ask us questions and check out what we had to say about our new expansion pack. We had almost 8,000 visitors asking over 10,000 questions in those 90 minutes!

For those of you who couldn't make it, below is a short summary of some of the most frequently asked questions and answers.

The cast

DICEfigge = Niklas Fegraeus, Lead Designer
DICE_cmd = Gustav Halling, Gameplay Designer
DICEzh1nt0 = Daniel Matros, Global Community Manager
DICEKleanupguy = Björn Johnsson, Producer
8,000 fans = You!

D-LordD-Lord : Will the hardcore mode stay for Vietnam?
DICEfigge: Yes, there will be hardcore mode available.

MasonMason: Are Vietnam maps available for all modes, including Squad DM?
DICEfigge: Yes, all modes are available on all maps!

ChargerCarl: Will Vietnam stats show up under BC2 or as a separate game?
DICEfigge: Everything you score in Vietnam will count towards your normal progression, so you will still get your ranks and unlocks, regardless if you play vanilla or Vietnam.

MattMatt: Can the flamethrower be reloaded with the ammo, or do you have to die to get if full again?
DICE_cmd: Yes, the flamethrower replenishes your ammo while standing next to an ammo box.

Derozero: Do you still have magnum ammo and body armor specs?
DICEfigge: You will be able to use all specializations you have unlocked, with the exception of those too modern to have an equivalent in the Vietnam era (which is only two) [that would be motion sensor and spotting scope -- Editor's note].

daniel44: how big are the maps compared to the now available?
DICE_cmd: The maps have the same size mix as BC2, but since it's in Vietnam there is more forest and trenches to hide in that promotes infantry fighting!

dariuszek: Is knife killing in Vietnam the same as in Bad Company 2?
DICE_cmd: Yes it is, but we have actually tweaked knifing in both BC2 and Vietnam to get a quicker response in both games!

MAC MAC: why is there no possibility to hang a tank onto a helicopter?
DICEzh1nt0: Because that feature wasn't used a lot in the original Vietnam so we removed it to fit in other cool things in the game.

Shmil Shmi: Will the recon class get anything to replace motion mines?
DICEfigge: Yes, they'll be able to use both the TNT and mortar at the same time.

Nick930930: Can you still spot enemies for the rest of your team by pressing "Select"?
DICE_cmd: Spotting mechanics are the same as in BC2.

Kenny Kenny: Did you guys tweak the Thompson and M1 at all or will it handle exactly like BFBC2?
DICE_cmd: All weapons in Vietnam have unique tweaks compared to BC2.

Bach: Will there be any cows in the game?
DICE_Kleanupguy: We care for all animals here at Dice. We would never put an animal in such a dangerous enviroment.

Josh: What weapons on Huey?
DICE_zh1nt0: You have the main weapon for the pilot which are rockets. 2 side mounted guns as well.

Jayross: In Vietnam Rush, what are we destroying? Not M-coms, I bet.
DICE_cmd: You are destroying the radio communication centrals.

That's it for now. We loved having you over and will definitely try and take the time to meet you again like this in the future. Sorry if your question never came up in the chat. 10,000 is a big number, even for a bunch of devs equipped with pizza and cola!

Interesting... all my radios work just fine.
It's actually quite interesting hearing all the music on the battlefield when vehicles are around.

yup, the Hueys take direct damage from small arms fire unlike the choppers in the main game (they require HMGs or the M95 to do that kind of damage) and its to make up for the fact that the RPG is incredibly slow and the Huey far more nimble, and that there are no tracer darts, no fast Gustavs or guided M136AT4s, as well as a distinct absence of stationary HMG turrets.

At least the machine guns on the tanks can actually aim mostly up

But it really only takes two players with LMGs (M60 is probably the best due to most damage and slower ROF for better accuracy with sustained fire) to effectively deter a Huey. Luckily there's only one rush map (Phu Bai) where the defenders have to worry about the Huey without any tanks or jeeps with HMGs to fend it off.

Guys,

I just bought the code yesterday and logged on today for the first time. I paid $14.99 on EA[dot]com and it keeps saying "INVALID CODE"!!

WTF is going on? And contacting EA seems to be a major PITA.

HELP!!

HELP!!

Perhaps you are trying to enter the code the wrong way. It was not how I expected it. Don't log in, then select Redeem Code from the Multiplayer menu. Instead follow the instructions from the e-mail you got with the code:

Redemption Instructions
1) Install the latest Battlefield: Bad Company™ 2 patch to have the Vietnam menu item available on the main menu screen.
2) Click the Vietnam menu item.
3) Enter your activation code into the code redemption box and click "Redeem Code" to begin playing Battlefield: Bad Company™ 2 Vietnam.

If that is not it, make sure you are not confusing any "ohs" with "zeroes".
I entered my code in all upper case (like my code), and included the dashes/hyphens.

PS. People seem to have good experiences with EA live chat: http://support.ea.com/chat

Thanks for the tip. Crazy that they'd ship it with this turned off when it's one of the selling points of the game. Now that I have it working, I can enjoy shooting guys out of their jeeps and hearing their music play on.

Has anyone figured out why some snipers seem to have mortar strikes but it doesn't show up as an option for the rest of us?

instead of recon balls Recon get both TNT and mortars

and Assault can't get TNT like it can get C4 in the main game, the M79 compliments the all-kit weapons along with the ARs

It's a lot more challenging camping outside in a tent rather than in a computer game, and is, at least IMO, a lot more fun.

And I prefer games that are not camp fests and fights that actually feel like a fight and not whoever landed the first punch.

Any noob can point and click, but can they retain their aim on a tough/moving target and maintain the steady bursts of fire required to finish the kill while under heavy pressure? If a player has excellent aim and reaction times but cannot sustain that skill over a period of time that's fine, there's always HC mode.

Come on now, you do realize that everyone has equal access to this "cheat", right? Not being able to sit in one spot and having to move to keep from retaliation kills I could easily argue as being much tougher.

this. Even though I suck at hitting moving targets or move myself.

Even in normal mode there are tons of campers and there are certain locations where it's hard to actually kill them without switching to recon and snipe them or grenade spam them.
That's why I like the kill-cam. Either he moves away or he won't live much longer.

Only downside is that bolt-action sniper rifles are a bit underpowered without 1 hit kill. You basically only get to kill campers expect on wide open maps. Eg. an akaban or m16 with 4x scope is often more effective than a sniper rifle.

It seems rare that you can out shoot someone in this game when they see you first and get the first shot off, not impossible, but usually you should be a dead man. And when you dont kill someone when you shoot first it typically feels like you were cheated. A long winded way of saying I really dont see the difference between normal and hardcore in that regard. The person who would miss the burst shot in hardcore will likely miss multiple bursts in normal mode. It may take less to kill someone, but the ratios are probably the same. I just dont like losing the mini map, spotting, etc, but especially the mini map. I played on a HC server the other day by accident and I couldn't even find the objectives! I also typically end up tk'ing a lot with FF on. Too much detail on the screen to differentiate friend and foe, unlike Halo (red and blue). Shoot first, let the server sort them out is my style, but that doesnt lend itself to hardcore.

Apparently you won't see it on the menu, but you have it.

Spawn in the game as a recon and try it. It's not in the menu but you have TNT under 3 and Mortar under 4. (as long as you have unlocked the Mortar in BFBC2)

Thanks guys - I hadn't cycled through my weapons to find that. I guess DICE doesn't have a really good way of showing that on the loadout screen.

Another question - in one game, a Huey was dominating my team because we could never take it down despite huge amounts of small arms fire directed at it. They said they had two engies on board fixing it, and I could actually see that in the killcam (I was killed over and over by the Huey). But when I tried doing that for my team, I couldn't get our Huey fixed from inside. I pointed my blowtorch in all directions. What's the trick for that?
