It was explained by Loki with one line basically...saying Odin had to use a lot of "dark energy" to send Thor to Earth.

It got great reviews from almost all my friends but I didn't realize it was this big of an event. I was under the impression that aside from Ironman all the other superhero movies that went 'into' Avengers were pretty mediocre.

Tony Stark made me laugh, but I was pleasantly surprised that the Hulk made me laugh any more. Especially those latter scenes, one with him and Loki (You can't bully me), and the one with him and Thor.

The scene after the credits was also awesome.

Whedon done good.

I'll be seeing it in the next week or so. We have all the movies leading up to it on blu and I've been rewatching them with him the last couple weeks. Definitely looking forward to it.

Anybody have any opinions on the 3d (aside from the usual 3d sucks whiners)? I usually see the 3d version as long as it isn't a converted movie. Say what you want but my son and I thoroughly enjoy the 3d movies.

Indeed. A lot of funny one-liners were missed due to the crowd's reaction. Such a great time at the movies.

Is that Gross sales? Because our group of 5 shelled out some $60 for tickets. I'll also bet that Dark Knight does as good or better. Maybe even Spiderman... the latest trailer actually had me wanting to watch it.

I doubt The Dark Knight Rises will do as well. At least from what I can recall, the newer Batman movies haven't really been marketed to children, which while not a bad thing, it means they may not go and see it. It would be interesting to see a demographic breakdown for the ticket sales for The Avengers.

Don't get me wrong... I think the third Batman movie will do very well, but I don't see it breaking 200 million. Maybe I'll have to look up the opening figures from the previous two movies. Typically the last movie in a series does do better than the previous ones (as long as the priors were rated well).

This is what i think as well. I think Avengers will be the big money movie of the year. Batman and Promethius will do well but probably not $200mill. Batman it think will earn a lot more than Promethius though just because sci-fi/horror isnt usually big block busters. But geeks like us will love it

It will easily break 200 million domestically, probably by the second weekend. TDK is one of the highest-grossing movies of all-time, and lots of folks are anxious to see Nolan's finale to his series.

i'm sure he meant $200 M on opening weekend, not overall
just comparing the rate at which the rake in $

You gotta wonder how much of that was due to Heath Ledger dying and the hype of his Joker performance though. Batman Begins only did $50 million on opening weekend. Don't get me wrong, I'll be seeing the new one in the theater but it's gonna be really hard for it to come close to Avengers.

Ah, yes. That makes sense. Either way, motion picture companies are sitting back and lighting their cigars with 100 dollar bills, because this year is gonna be insanely profitable for them.

Yes, I meant opening weekend gross. Sorry for the lack of clarity.

The Dark Knight made $158 million, which is certainly no slouch of a performance. Although, I would guess that The Dark Knight Rises will probably do between $160 and $175 million. My thought is that The Dark Knight was a rather popular film with its pre-release hype, and that will probably make its performance similar to how the last of a popular series performs. The last Harry Potter movie (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2) pulled in around $170 million in its opening weekend.

Although, if we were to take Part 1's performance into account, it only made $125 million in its opening weekend, which is a boost of 40% for the finale. Although, that could also be partly due to the fact that everyone knew the previous one would be more of a cliffhanger.

I think it will be interesting to see. I know I'll be seeing The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man. I really enjoy good comic book movies.

I went and saw this yesterday morning and really liked it. I had already seen The Dark Knight Rises trailer on Youtube, but seeing it on the big screen was awesome. I can't wait for July.

Under the impression? You didn't see them??

Incredible Hulk was decent or okay, Captain American was good, Iron Man 1 & 2 were great, and Thor was even better than Iron Man.

Go see them. Then go see Avengers. Really, really good.

I finally made it to the drive-in last night to see it. What sucked was that it was so busy on Saturday night that they ran out of pizza and fries. After getting a prime parking spot (dead center, front, NY's biggest screen) I called a local pizza shop and went for a half mile jog/sprint to get back before the movies started.

And, for what it's worth, it was a double-header with John Carter. I reallllllly wish I would have just gone home and gone to bed, since it was nearly 11:30 before that one even began. It was horrible.

not even close

LMAO I like how you tell someone else's opinion is wrong with your own opinion.

I for one agree with the other poster. It has been the best super hero movie to date IMO (In my opinon) in case you were wondering what that stood for

Yea, I'm curious as to what he thinks is the best one, and since The Avengers is "not even close", what other super-hero movies are better.

Avengers is way over-hyped right now, just like TDK was (was #1 on IMDB after the first weekend @ something like 9.4 and way ahead of Shawshank and The Godfather and has since sunk down to a respectable #8)

there's just too many plot holes and conveniences (like Thor showing up out of nowhere), as well as absurdities like how Phil Coulson "dying", an otherwise insignificant character, was the one trigger needed to get the team to get their shit together, as if the fate of the world wasn't enough?

Or how they way overplayed the value of regular humans like Black Widow and Hawkeye and portrayed them as near-equals to the likes of Thor or Hulk. Way too much of a pandering to children going on for me to rate this anywhere near the likes of Spiderman 2 or TDK or Begins or even Iron Man 1.

Its an amazing action movie, but its far from coming close to perfection.

Its a popcorn movie. Maybe one of the best ever in that regard, but certainly not one of the best comic book movies.

so he's allowed to share his opinion that its the best comic book movie ever, and I'm not allowed to disagree?

I never explicitly stated his opinion was wrong, just that I didn't agree with his opinion

Damn, I wish I had your experience. I went to a 3:15 showing on Friday. Sat through 5 or so trailers, then the sound cut out on the trailer for Brave, then the movie started with no sound. Got up and went down the hall to the 3:45 screening. Previews started at 3:45 and were still going at 4:15. At 4:15 the screen went blank for 10 minutes, then the movie finally started. I saw 12 previews at the 3:45 screening, many of which I saw at the 3:15 screening:

Batman (twice)
Paranorman (twice)
Brave (twice)
Prometheus (twice)
Rock movie thing with Cruise (twice)
Steve Carell/Keira Knightly (twice)
Spider-man
Battleship
Johnny Depp/Tim Burton movie
Expendables 2
The Dictator

Plus 2 more I can't remember.
