I wasn't joking.

Dark Knight Rises

Prometheus

Skyfall

I think the Dark Knight Rises will be very good however it's a bit darker so even if it is rated PG-13 more responsible parents won't bring their younger children to see it. this movie does however have the best chance to outgross the Avengers.

Prometheus if I recall correctly will be getting an R rating as the director desires for it. While I'm confident it will earn a good amount of money the R rating almost guarantees that it won't beat the Avenger's

Skyfall... I'm a fan of the latest James Bond, but this movie has the least chance.

If you're talking about the quality of the story well I'm confident that at least two of these movies will equal the Avengers.

However, Joss Whedon is well known for producing quality work in sci-fi and fantasy in television before he moved on to movies and really Marvel didn't require too much of the story so it was well within Joss Whedon's abilities to meet and exceed Marvel's expectations.

I dont have much doubt that the Dark Knight will beat the Avengers. PG-13 is not ID enforced like how R is so its not a huge deal.

Saw it last night, loved it. Robert Downey Jr. pretty much carried the movie.

The one minor problem I had is the Hulk was mindless monster in the beginning of the movie, and then at the end he was in control and could be directed. Not sure how that works.

Top notch movie though. I HIGHLY recommend seeing Capt. America and Thor before going to the Avengers though, otherwise you'll spend the first half of the movie trying to figure out what's going on (they do re-explain the story eventually, but it's more enjoyable if you go in with pre-knowledge).

I was LOLing at the number of old people that were at the showing. One guy looked like we was around 90, hunched over with a cane, and had to take his hearing aids out and adjust them. Surprised they would go to see something like this

BTW- I am SO hungry for shawarma now!

The Hulk can be a defense mechanism (Hulk in control) or controlled change (Banner in control). What do you think happened on the ship?

Good flick I enjoyed it a lot. Didn't think it was better than The Hunger Games, but an awesome flick.

This is what i think as well. I think Avengers will be the big money movie of the year. Batman and Promethius will do well but probably not $200mill. Batman it think will earn a lot more than Promethius though just because sci-fi/horror isnt usually big block busters. But geeks like us will love it

The Dark Knight grossed $533M in the US and over $1B world-wide, #3 grossing movie in the US of ALL-TIME...how could it even be POSSIBLE that this movie would gross less than $200M?

In addition, parents are ignorant. They are just going to see Batman and think its kiddy and take their kids.
Batman will be big, no doubt - just not that big. It's a darker movie, and won't be as "fun" as Avengers.

Also, I think a quick breakdown of the math showed that TDKR would have to increase ticket sales by 40% over the last movie to match Avengers. Lack of 3D and IMAX 3D (premium ticket prices) will hurt gross sales $$.

avengers was so predictable and the acting was average just like every other superhero movie. i give it 3/10.

I think the confusion is that there have been 2 hulk movies(I know made by separate people) and the first half of this movie, and not one time in any of them did the hulk do a controlled change until the end of this movie. And they did not give much of an explanation so it is pretty confusing.

Like I said, I wasn't sure how that worked. I never followed the Hulk. I was also puzzled at how he could change at will.

Now I know, and knowing is half the battle.

The $200 million figure is the weekend gross... you know, that number talked about in the thread's title?

Liked Hunger Games MUCH more than Avengers.

hated the way they portrayed Bruce Banner. I liked Ed Norton's Banner better. Plus they cant detect an explosive tipped arrow that's capable of ripping thru multiple levels of a carrier's armor?!

Cliffs:
Hunger Games > Avengers

No movie for the rest of the year will have a bigger opening than The Avengers. It takes a combination of several events to demolish the opening weekend record by such a large margin. Additionally, The Avengers had incredibly wide-appeal due to its mashup of Marvel characters.

Spider-Man will have a big opening, since it's opening on the Independence Day holiday weekend. I would say something in the $140-$150 million range. It will top out at $300 million domestic, probably $700 million worldwide.

Dark Knight Rises will not beat the records set by its predecessor. Also $150 million opening, maybe $350 million domestic, and $800 million worldwide.

The Avengers will be something to watch during its box office run. It's already going to hit $370 million domestic by the end of this weekend, and will finish somewhere around $520 million by the end of its run. I think Men In Black 3 will steal enough business to keep it from beating Dark Knight, Titanic or Avatar on the domestic charts. Worldwide, The Avengers is a beast; it will easily surpass Dark Knight by next weekend (Dark Knight played comparatively weak in international markets), and will top out around $1.2 billion.

Yep I pretty much agree with this, The Dark Knight Rises clearly has the best chance, I'm most excited about Prometheus though! I'm also really pleased to hear it's going to be an 18, that's awesome.

finally saw The Avengers this weekend...

I won't say that I didn't enjoy it, but I don't get the hype at all.

friends/family on my facebook wall have been talking about it like it's the greatest movie to be released in their generation, and seeing it 2-3 times.

maybe it's just because I've never been a big Avengers fan in general... they've always seemed like a bunch of boring, basic bitch superheroes to me (not as bad as Justice League, but up there) and I can't really get behind Loki when his only motivation to destroy the world is "whaa, my dad didn't love me enough."

Personally, I'm not surprised that Loki doesn't like the Avengers as much as everyone else.

my username has nothing to do with Loki of the comics, though... while I'm a huge comic book nerd, my forays into mainstream Marvel books are typically limited to the various X-teams (ideally, I'll read whichever books don't involve crazy space shit and aren't centered around Wolverine... which is to say, X-Factor)

Fun movie but not really special or terrific. I liked Iron Man 1 and Thor much better.

The Avengers is already cracking the $1billion mark. It will likely be over $1.2billion by the end of next weekend. It will still have some legs come Memorial Day weekend. It will easily slide into the #3 slot on the all time unadjusted list. Doubtful it will surpass Avatar or Titantic unless it has enough legs to last through July 4.

do they ever release just the "butts in the seat" numbers?

I'm always curious as to how much these "omg, one beeeelion dollars" numbers are inflated by increased ticket prices and the super expensive Imax/3D ticket sales... also kinda curious as to how the rising global population plays into it, if you were to compare a movie released in the 1940's (2 billion world population) vs today (7 billion world population)

They have two lists,

adjusted for inflation

and

unadjusted for inflation

Gone With the Wind tops that adjusted for inflation and will never be surpassed. It made ~$200million in 1939. $200million in 1939 equals $3.3billion in todays money(adding in theatrical rereleases over the years it would top $5billion).

The reason they keep to lists is you really can't fairly compare. Yes there has been ticket inflation, new technology, bigger markets, more people. But competition is also much much greater these days. Not just from movies, but other from other forms of entertainment as well.
