regardless of how big the image is for this film, it's still a bunch of invulnerable people being tossed around and bashed into things, constantly, for about two hours, with little to no stakes involved.

I mean, it's nicely-coreographed action, but in no way is it very compelling.

Why? A movie is only compelling if everyone dies so you and your partner can huge and cry your eyes out?

The Black Widow close combat moves were awesome. Not sure if she was able to pull that off naturally or they had strings or something to help. CA was probably the worst. His movie too the fighting wasn't that great.

I'm kind of glad that everyone marked down their 3D Blu-Ray price. It was $19.99 on Amazon, and my order took advantage of their $5 coupon for the movie. With the pre-order price guarantee, which includes the release date price, I got it for $15!

Why? Are you one of those people that when studios slap a transfer to a "Blu-ray" its automatic "Oh my God! Its the best PQ evar!"?

On modern big-blockbuster movies, I think it's pretty safe to assume that the Blu-ray PQ is going to be pretty damn good and always better than DVD. I can't image there has been any blockbuster movie in the past 5 years where the DVD has actually looked better than the Blu-ray.

nah, you jsut have a poor grasp of context, so you interpret that as me being wrong? got it.

here, I'm tired of this:

I could have basically made my comment about any superhero Movie--I could have said, All I see is a bunch of X-Men being tossed around and breaking shit, with no one ever really dying or any real consequences...so why the fuck should I care about these people?

(the same, and far, far worse situation with these deplorable transformers flicks, or course.)

My point (which isn't exclusively tied to the specifics--you seem to have a very limited understanding of concepts), is that there are no stakes for the characters. This is what makes any particularl film completely un-compelling. Look up "stakes," and spend as much time in film and story theory as I have and get back to me...

That being said, I never said anything about The Avengers not being fun and entertaining. I said the action is good--but it certainly isn't compelling. These guys are invulnerable. They always will be.
....what's the point? It's a fun jaunt for two hours, but nothing to remember when you're done. It certainly doesn't challenge you in any way. (not that it has to....but why should it be considered any worse or better than the next superhero flick that shoves invulnerable anti-humans in your face?)

Well said, I agree 100%.

In all fairness, I thought Avengers was very well done, and entertaining enough in the theater. But it wasn't thought provoking, it didn't ever really make me care about any of the characters, I was never on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen- it was all 100% predictable typical superhero movie stuff.

Here is where it falls on my movie-rating-line:

5.0 --- Memento --- Mulholland Dr --- Fight Club
4.0 --- Starship Troopers --- Star Trek (Reboot) --- Prometheus
3.0 --- The Avengers --- X-men First Class
2.0 --- The Expendables --- Fantastic Four --- Twilight
1.0 --- 1000 Words ---
0.0

As a brainless action movie, it's best in class, but I can't rate any brainless action movie all that highly. Sorry The Avengers, nice attempt though.

The DVD looks outstanding for a DVD, even better than some of the half-assed blu-ray ports I've seen. But it doesn't hold a candle to the blu-ray.

Sounds like you're talking about game software when you call the Blu-Ray version a "port."

Let me guess, the movie has great "graphics" too, right?

Hard to take you seriously when you say it's the best brainless action movie, then rank Star Trek and Starship Troopers above it.

The Avengers is brainless if you know little background about the characters. What they feed the public in Thor, Iron Man, Capt America, and those other 1 superhero movies is hogwash compared to whom they really are.

Was 1000 Words really that bad? I keep wanting to give Eddie Murphy another shot and thought the premise looked interesting.

Eddie Murphy and Nicolas Cage should team up for the greatest flop of all time.

Starship Troopers is a perfect example of why The Avengers wasn't *that* good.

Starship Troopers had character development, followed by those characters being ripped away and killed in a grisly yet realistic manner. It had fights where the "good guys" lost and actually suffered real consequences, again unlike The Avengers, where losing a fight didn't really cause any real damage, they all just got back up and did it again.

It also had some awesome parody of the real world built into it, which many people just don't get, I'm assuming you fall into that category.

Star Trek is similar- there are real conflicts with consequences, example: Vulcan getting destroyed. When you watch The Avengers you know from the very beginning that in the end everything will turn out fine and well and no real permanent damage will be done to anything, this makes you less invested in the story.

EDIT: yes, 1000 words was that bad. It was painful to watch. I only went to see it because the theater was across the street from the tire place, and I need to kill an hour and a half while the replaced my tires.
