The Battle For Baghdad Has Just Begun!

Considering that the main headline on both CNN and MSNBC states that there is heavy fighting with the Republican Guard near Baghdad, I find it hard to believe that someone would need a link posted to point out the obvious.

Why would we even invade Baghdad? Why not encircle it, cut it off, and let the Republican Guard and top leaders realize that we aren't going away, and that their only choice is to surrender or die?

The Pentagon has said repeatedly that they did not want to participate in any siege type combat. They want to go in a take control so they can get aid to the people of Baghdad. Any siege would just hurt the civilian population even more.

Since the Iraqi prople have NOT risen up against Saddam we shouldn't expect reprisials if we left right now.

However, I propose a different scenario - since we are now there, send a major force into Baghdad - find the WMD and PROVE to the rest of the world that Saddam HAS WMD - take over Iraqi TV ands show his own people the WMD . . . then go BACK to the UN and argue for a United Nations effort with Arab soldiers to liberate Iraq.

I am sure there are more .

Gotta hang my hat with Red on this one (my GOD the world is turning up-side down).

Even IF we did totally bungle this war, I don't think it would really be apparent this early unless it was something like forgetting to bring the gas and ammo and we were all still stuck in Kuwait.

I will say getting an objective handle on the bigger picture does seem to be more difficult with news dispatches coming in every ten minutes of a 24 hour news cycle.
