The best Cell Phone?

I have a Nokia 8210 and a 6210, the 8210 is a nice show off phone but its just too small to use and keeps locking up. The 6210 though is a great phone with lots of useful features

My sisters brand-new Cingular 8280 does not pick up in her dorm room(at UCLA dorms, Sunset Village). My Verizon Startac picks up great. LIkewise, hiking in Topanga state park, a friends Ericcson Cingular Phone was not picking up, while I was able to make calls out(didnt' recieve any, though).

Maybe its the different phone.

P.S. My old PacBell phone was the 6190. Crappy service where I live(mulholland/laurel canyon area) and i noticed poor coverage in hte north san fernando valley. I had both my verizon and pac-bell phone activated for 1 week, and driving around town the verizon had clearly better signal strength. Plus having analog in ZERO coverage areas is better than having no service.

Mike, did she change the case on it? The guy who sold me mine said that if I bought a new case for it, not just a faceplate, but also a cover for the back too, said that reception wouldn't be so good. I don't live in the dorms so I can't tell you about up there. In my fraternity the reception is good in my room, all over the house, except in my closet, which unfortunately is the most quiet place that I can talk on the phone :frown:

Today I walked all over campus from Mens Gym up to the Sculpture Garden down to the Inverted Fountain across to Boelter, constantly on the phone with 4 bars of reception. I lost reception only in the building. No cell phone carrier gets reception in Boelter and MS. They are thick concrete walls.

Odd how that happens...

I'm not familiar with where you are... I do know when I was visiting the engineering building(to do some "work/playing around with machinery" for an old physics teacher) at CSUN that my verizon phone was fine.

No, she didn't change the cover at all. Not yet, at least.

Weird... I'm definately much happier with the Verizon startac than I was with the Cingular/Pac-Bell 6190, because when I go hiking I actually get a signal now.

is your service a long-distance plan or local plan? Maybe they &quot;improve&quot; service with the long-distance plans... My sisters and my old plan were local-plans.

Don't you guys have something like AT&amp;T there? I have it in Hawaii and I always get 4 bars. I have a Nokia 8260 fully tweaked. Had it for awhile. Dropped it multiple times and it still works fine. The only reason I chose this over the 8290 is for the digital and analog connection. I get 4 bars through tunnels and even hiking. Choose something that can switch from a digital signal to a analog one. If not go with VoiceStream or Verizon. But IMHO choose something like AT&amp;T. Nokias are the best phones ever made IMHO. =)

At&amp;T in Los Angeles is worse than PacBell... my aunt has worse coverage anytime we're in the same car, adn she had an At&amp;t nokia 61xx.

Pacbell/Cingular is very bad in most San Marino and Temple City area,
Sprint PCS is very good in these 2 cities.

Pacbell is cheap and got nice looking phones for personal use.
AT&amp;T and Verizon are good for business use.

Some guys here are talking about 8210, 8250, these are Europe/Asia GSM900/PCS1800 model, not suitable for US.

They make covers like that for the 8290 too. They are aftermarket. They don't come wiht the phone, at least the 8290. The 8260s I looked at didn't have them either.

I have the Nokia 8260 w/AT&amp;T service. I almost bought the 8890, but the crome finish is not so nice when it has lots of fingerprints on it. Sorry if that sounds anal retentive. Anyhow, I'm really happy with the 8260. Very small and light, excellent sound quality, eternal battery life. Actually, the thing I like best is that it has an internal antena, so it won't poke you if you carry it in your pocket or wear it on your belt. But that's just my two cents....
