I think the 3 day trial + cost of shipping is just to deter people from returning this stuff. I mean, if it's only costing you $250 - why spend $100 of it just to return it? I think you could probably just sell them for like $200 just as easily.

I doubt they'd stay in business very long or keep prices low if they ate shipping costs on returns as a matter of policy. I agree that speaker choice is very subjective though. The best thing is to find someone who has a set of these nearby and beg for an audition.

So no-one has any opinions on how the two 5-spkr sets compare?

i highly doubt that someone would have the two speaker sets in the same room, since that's the best way to compare them.

Wasn't really expecting a report of side-by-side comparison. I was hoping some of the folks who own either set would post their experience and why they chose one over the other...

I guess so. You do find Fluance speakers on eBay

well, i do own the av-htb, but i never even thought about the sx-htb. based on it costs rougly 30% more (incl shipping). IMO, the av-htb perform pretty good, and that's good enough for me. but again, i'm not an audiophile.

I Love mine.

They are great speakers on a budget and I honestly like them better then my old Polk units.

You cannot beat it for the price.

man, there are a lot of "brand name snobs" here.

those companies should put you guys on the payroll. nothing like a little blind faith to move the merchandise.

How do you guys think that these would compare to the Onkyo SKS-HT500 speakers that can be had for about $180 (including shipping) and include a sub? I will be buying a set of budget speakers and have been leaning towards the Fluance, but the Onkyo set is tempting as well. Anyone have any opinion or comment on how they would compare?

I have both!

UMMMM IT COMES DOWN TO BUDGET....FLUANCES SOUN BETTER BUT u HAVE TO SPEND EXTRA CASH ON A SUB.

oops caps sorry.... I listen to my Onkyo setup More often because its all on my HDTV but the Fluance setup in my bedroom sound better But I allready had a 400-500 watt sony subwoofer so i didnt have to invest in a new sub.

if yer on a budget thats really tight and space is tight get the Onkyo.
If you want better sound{dont get me wrong the onkyos sound nice}ad you have extra cash and space get the Fluances.

either way i am betting you will get a great deal and be Very satisfied.

Thanks for the response XCLAN, I was really hoping (but doubting) to hear from someone who had both. I do already have a nice sub (Audiosource 15") and think that I am going to end up going with the Fluance speakers.

I can't decide if I want the SX-HTB or the AV-HTB. I like the black finish better, but I like the fact that the HTB all have matching tweeters and appear to be slightly higher quality.

I also plan to get speakers for a 6.1 setup and will need to get the rear speaker seperate. Would it be better to get a center or surround speaker for the rear center? Either way it doesn't look like they sell matching speaker seperately, so I am not sure what I am going to do, any ideas?

They spend a lot of money on advertising because they want consumers to know how great their products are. That's also why you can find Bose in high-end stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, and The Good Guys!! These stores don't carry low-end crap like B&W, NHT, PSB, etc. Those speakers are WAY overpriced. Bose is so popular because everybody knows how good they sound. I would highly disrecommend buying these Fluance speakers because you simply can't listen to them first. You don't know how they sound, and you rely on a bunch of monkeys to write reviews on them. Now with the 20% MSN promotion, you can get Bose even cheaper...you simply can't beat Bose for the dollar. Personally, I sold my crappy B&W 802NT's to get a Bose home theater set...they look very nice next to my Krell and McIntosh amps, and all of my guests know that I'm an audiophile when they see my Bose speakers.

Valsalva
that was a joke right? plz tell me that was a joke.

I have used bose and regretted it. I have hear many bose systems and I actually gave away my 802's for free.
then i got a rediculous set of equipment, all carver, audible illusions, and lansing rack equipment. Thats audiophile gear not Bose. Bose is for yuppies who want to think they are audiophiles. If you really think bose is good then try seeing some other sets for the same price range. Especially one built by someone who really knows what they are doing.

I am gonna get this fluance set and a decent sub. I'm sure its decent for the price and it's only going on one of my computers anyways.

Yes it was..if you had actually payed attention to this thread you would have seen that.

-- Now on to why I really posted --

I ordered the Fluance set that was listed here, along with the recommended YAMAHA HTR-5550 reciever from Amazon.com. I will have them on Tuesday and post my experience with them a few days after ( after the break in time ). I think the total for the reciever and the speakers ( with 50ft of cable and 2 banana plugs ) came out to about $530 with shipping. This is all the wedding money we got to spend so it better be damn good! =)

Guys if ya want a nice system, do what i did and you'll have an awsime system for relativly cheap.
Go get youself some JBL n26 fronts,n24 rears and a ncenter. They are timbre matched and give an amazing sound for the price. Next go get a Sony sawm40 sub and stuff it with polyfil. This will give you an awsome sub that a lot of people compare to $500 ones. As for a Reciever, i got a Kenwood vr-507 which had tons of features, was powerful and has served me well

Someone mentioned tying in the VX10 ($168) sub from 6ave.com. I have the sub and it fills a roughly 20'30' with resonably loud tight bass, especially after I filled it with polyfill. Might also want to check out the Sony wm40 sub on other forums, a 12 incher suppossedly sounds great for low $ after the mod.
As far as speakers in the price range go with Axiom, unless you can snag an increasingly rare pair of Michauras for less which sound (and look) even better.

What cables do you folks use? I won't have enough on my older 12 guage reel to wire this so I was thinking of ordering some 12 guage oxygen free shielded cables from cablestogo.com. I haven't tried their speaker cable yet but 12 guage oxygen free shielded cabling at under 90 cents a foot seems great to me. Especially considering I have bought some S-Video and RCA cables off them and was really impressed for the money. I am really liking cablestogo. They have alot of great budget cabling thats awesome to me for the price/performance.

As long as an amp (i.e., a receiver) sits between your computer and the speakers, sure.

Whenever you hookup a reciever, but especially when doing this, make SURE you ground your reciever (usually to the screw between the outlets)! If not, the static electricity or excess current your computer or reciever is dumping to ground will blow the amp on the sound card. I blew a new Aureal Vortex2 doing this.

does filling the sub cabinet with polyfill effect heat dissipation from the sub?

or is that not even an issue?

(yes I know what filling with polyfill does to a sub from an acoustic standpoint)

Thanks!

I have the same VX-10 sub from 6ave. Only had it about a week and it is decent, but seems slightly boomy. Does the pollyfill help it that much?
