I know you guys probably won't consider this a hot deal, but I bought this Onkyo system about 6 months ago from Circuit City. I am very impressed with this system, the quality of the product (all wooden cabinent speakers produce 100x's better sound than those $299 plastic systems) and the receiver supports almost all the latest technology (DTS definitely, but don't know about 6.1).

Anyway, the whole system cost me about $530 with taxes. Let me tell you though, the quality of sound from this system matches some of the pricier Bose and Polk Audio speaker sets.

Onkyo HTS650

This link doesn't take you directly, but scroll about halfway down the page and you'll see it.

I finally decided on a receiver to get with these speakers. Now all I have to do is order the stuff. I am going with the kenwood 6070 and these speakers.

Someone that is into HT buy these and let us know!

What is the relevance of this statement? does this set come with these speakers? (not being sarcastic,I want to know what your talking about and why)

The Bipolar speakers oscillate between very high highs and very low lows, often with no reason

I got mine on EGay for $201.50 shipped. These speakers rock! Work great with my DTS sub. Thanks for bringing to my attention.

Yeah, I got mine this week. Pretty happy with them so far. Haven't had time to watch a proper movie with them yet to showcase them, but listened to a little music and left the CD player running all day on the break-in recommendation made here.

$99 DLS subwoofer

Unfortunately Parts Express no longer sells this sub. Way too bad!. I'm glad i got mine when they did as this thing beats anything I've heard below $250.

Thump553, The DLS sub that everyone likes on hometheaterforum.com isn't being sold anymore. They all like the DLS-10, which is a powered sub. you linked to is a passive sub.

FWIW: Bipole speakers are useless with today's 5.1 and 6.1 receivers.. they were meant mainly for 'pro-logic' surround so that the sound from the rear speakers would be distributed and wouldnt appear to be coming from any particular place. With 5.1 and 6.1 setups, however, you WANT to localize the sounds coming from the rear speakers and thus it is generally believed that normal rear speakers are preferrable, but this is a big point of debate.

Also, I have the Polk Audio PSW350 and PSW450 subs, and they are awesome... but a little bit pricier than whats been mentioned so far on this thread.

Parts Express. Great place to get em, and they have a lot of choices. Shipping is kinda costly per order though, so put everything you need together, and order once.

If you want a cheap surround setup this might be a good deal, but I would check out walmart, k-mart, or target as well. The only positives I have heard on these were that they are cheap. I too am in the market for a cheap HT setup, but turned away from these after hearing about how bad they sound.

I ended up getting a set of Mission M73 ($250/pair) front towers and couldn't be happier. I will soon add another pair of rears for about the same price, and I already have a center and a sub, wo this setup will be around $500 for much better quality. check out www.audiogon.com they have great prices on top end equipment, and they dont have much to say about fluance, except they sound bad. Also you can do a search on forum.elitecaraudio.com. Cheap speakers, cheap sound....

I have the AV-5 mains and the large center.

They are excellent speakers. Paired with an Onkyo TX-SR800 and I am happy as heck with 'em. The center compares to the $500 Boston Aucostics I was considering buying at Tweeter, and the main's are as good as ones in the 600-700 price range easily as well.

I ordered directly from them, the order shipped quickly and they had excellent customer service. A real person called me up after my order and thanked me for the order etc.

I checked www.audiogon.com and not one person on that forum had actually heard a Fluance speaker. Your front speakers cost more than the entire Fluance system. Please provide a link to the post where someone who actually listened to them said they sounded bad and were not worth the money.

FYI....I mix pro sound for a living and know the difference between good and bad sounding speakers.

this is all i could find on fluance and apparently you said this:

ok, well I actually went out and picked up some Mission M73 floor standing speakers, 1/2 price, $250 for a pair and they are outstanding (at least to my ears) I read more on Fluance and found out that they arent really all that great. Now I just need a decent receiver and rears!

and this:
I think it is rude - err maybe that's flatulance?
They may be a good buy dollar-wise but not so good sound-wise.
It will be very hard to find floorstanders for under $300 that sound good. B&W Dm601 series 3, Monitor Audio Bronze, Acoustic Energy Aegis 1, Ascend Acoustics CBM-170 are all $300 standmounts that sound very good.
Cheap floorstanders than may sound good (haven't heard them all) B&W 309's, PSB (soundcity may have website that shows them), Monitor Audio Bronze 3, or Axiom- a Canadian company which allows in-home demos.

obviously neither have heard the system because he has never even heard of fluance and thought it was flatulence

this is the only comment i found from someone that actually listened to the fluances:

I started out on a system like this and enjoyed for many years. If I were starting out on a student budget, I would go with these. For a little more money than a shelf system, you get a lot more quality.
For even less, if you have a computer, I would upgrade your soundcard, and get Altec Lansing 621 speaker. Turtle Beach makes soundcards for under $100.
Anyone else have under-1k startup systems for students

Other than a few exceptions (ie, Bose - you get much less.... =P),

general rule of thumb is you get what you paid for.

You gotta wonder with speakers this huge w/ the parameters they set how they could sell at such a cheap price.
There's an article somewhere where someone took one apart right when he got it to examine them. Found it pretty helpful.

It's pretty stupid IMO to say "My speakers sound as if they were in a much higher price range" or a variant of that b/c EVERYONE says that. We'd all like to boast about how we all got the best deal in sound and how the huge purchase was worthy of our hard-earned money.

Well if EVERYONE's speakers are that much better, than doesn't that mean that they're all back to the same playing field from where they started?

I think the only truly credible people are those that have worked w/ this gear for years and years. So take most of these reviews w/ a grain of salt. While most people say that the $200-$250 Fluance set can't be beat at this price range (which would probably be true b/c you would be hard pressed to find a set of towers w/ the other speakers at this price), there are other alternatives that supposedly sound better. I think the NHT SuperZeros were one of the sets that could be had for this price range.

$200 for this seems like a good deal if you dont want great sound, I would get this to add to my system but im sure it would screw up the great sound of my polk towers other wise I be all over it.

Of course everything is subjective with audio.

I spent about 2 months researching receivers and speakers. IMO these speakers sound EXCELLENT, on par with the speakers that cost significantly more. For the record, I own these:

http://www.fluance.com/fluanceav5.html
http://www.fluance.com/fluancemv670c.html

As for how the company could sell higher-quality speakers for less, well, they have no marketing budget. They don't have a distribution chain and the overhead that comes with it, as well as the dealer markup that comes with it. If you build DIY speakers they are going to cost significantly less than an equivelant speaker from a retail chain, especially one such as Tweeter or other high-end audio store.

Other than a few exceptions (ie, Bose - you get much less.... =P),

This is a counter-example of the same theory. Bose spends TONS of money in advertising, etc, to convince their stuff is way better than it actually is.

Okay, how about the opinion of my friend who worked at Sound Playground and Tweeter selling audio equipment for years? His opinion is that they are awesome speakers.

We'd all like to boast about how we all got the best deal in sound and how the huge purchase was worthy of our hard-earned money.

I was trying to share my experience with these speakers. Not boast about or rationalize my purchase. I gambled on purchasing these speakers and have been extremely happy with them. I wanted to share my positive experience with someone else who might be considering making a purchase.

Don't waste your time on these, guys. What you want is BOSE. Best highs, best lows, must be BOSE!! They spend a lot of money on advertising because they want consumers to know how great their products are. That's also why you can find Bose in high-end stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, and The Good Guys!! These stores don't carry low-end crap like B&W, NHT, PSB, etc. Those speakers are WAY overpriced. Bose is so popular because everybody knows how good they sound. I would highly disrecommend buying these Fluance speakers because you simply can't listen to them first. You don't know how they sound, and you rely on a bunch of monkeys to write reviews on them. Now with the 20% MSN promotion, you can get Bose even cheaper...you simply can't beat Bose for the dollar. Personally, I sold my crappy B&W 802NT's to get a Bose home theater set...they look very nice next to my Krell and McIntosh amps, and all of my guests know that I'm an audiophile when they see my Bose speakers.
