I had Diskeeper but for some reason it won't run. I need to know the king of the heap of disk defraggers so I can get it, thanks very much.

I don't know if it was just a coincidence or not, but after using Diskeeper for a couple of months my 1.5yr old hard drive crashed.

I used to really like Norton Speeddisk, but for some reason it won't work on my system now that it's SP2 (which is weird because it worked fine when I was running an SP2 beta, so I don't know if it's some quirk with my system.)

Anyway, I'd also be interested to know what's the best defragger out there, especially if it was free.

Perfectdisk works great for me. I set it to run on reboot every once in awhile, and it's quick and easy.

O&O Defrag seems to me like a very good choice, been using it for a while now and my computer runs smoother than ever.

It's as coincindental as the forum member that claimed Win XP SP2 "broke" his NIC.

I also use O&O defrag, and have it installed on every system in the house here, the sheduling is very handy, that way you never forget it.

Are these options really any better than the built in wondows version? Do they run substantially faster, remove more fragments, run in TSR mode to keep it frag free all the time... whats so special that is worth $50?

I've been using Diskeeper for YEARS and it is an excellent defragger. It's the standard defrag app used at every facility (private and fed) I've ever worked at.

I didn't

I hope you're being sarcastic, but if you aren't I'll break it down and take the funny out of it...

Killing someone in most FPS games is known as fragging (getting a frag), so when he said to record yourself in UT2004 and then play it back in reverse it's going to show the death in reverse, bringing the person to life from pieces (IE: de-fragging someone). Hope that helps even though I'm sure it's not funny after that.

And XZeroII, that was a good one... made me smile!

Diskeeper works for me. Tried PerfectDisk before but after a while somehow it didn't work, so I'm back to Diskeeper.

Windows 2000/XP/2003 all have built-in defragmentation facilities with the disk management tools.

My vote goes to diskeeper...some dude trying to fix something at our house flipped the main power switch to our house off and on quickly, attempthing to troubleshoot something, but long enough to reboot the computer which was in the middle of defragging. diskeeper,as they claim, worked properly, so I didn't lose any data. not sure of the other defraggers already mentioned, but I've used diskeeper on multiple computers, and never, never had a problem with it. The only gripe I have about defraggers is WHY...a good filesystem, like the ones linux uses, as long as you keep them under ~90% full, never get very fragmented in the first place...

Just got done trying out O&O. It was using up way too much memory while not even running. Just the process alone was using 30k. Back to Diskkeeper for me.
