I'm curious what you guys consider to be the best single player and multiplayer first person shooters of all time. They can be the same or different games of course.
I know I'm going to get flamed for saying this, but for single player to me it's Crysis Warhead. I've never played a game that felt so cinematic and climactic. Very good suspension of disbelief in the game. It didn't really do any one thing that made it stand out, but it did so much well at the same time that it felt really solid altogether. The music, the visuals, the gameplay, the presentation, it all meshed together really nicely. I enjoyed it far more than Half Life, Half Life 2, Far Cry, Halo, and other games that people often would say is the best single player shooter. Bioshock was pretty awesome too.
For multiplayer, I'd say Team Fortress 2. Something about this game makes me keep coming back for more and more. It's terribly addicting. Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena were addicting for a while as well but this feels like it's going to hold my attention for much longer than either of those did. The gameplay is really fun, all of the characters have personality, the presentation with achievements and stats is superb, and the cartoony visuals are a nice breath of fresh air from all of those "realistic" shooters. Battlefield 1942 is a close second for me.
