^^ no way, a BLT without mayo is craptacular. It really should be called a LMBT since the mayo is mandatory.

Hard to beat a Reuben. or it's affable cousin, the Pastrami on Rye. I always replace the Reuben/Pastrami "dressing" with brown mustard, though.

My go-to is a standard Italian type: Salami, ham, bologna (has to be real meats, though), tomato, lettuce, sweet/pickled peppers, green peppers, oil and vinegar, provolone or pecorino fresco.

bonus points if the salami is boar.

The sandwich is probably my favorite food item. I also know for a fact that any time mayo is placed on a sandwich, that sandwich is instantly ruined.

I love Pastrami on Rye also, but as far as Mayo, I think of Hellman's on a BLT as a prerequisite

Just do it

On a side note, if it's turkey I don't consider it a Reuben really myself.

It's not even in the name! Either way, I'm not really into BLT anyway, never was my thing.

...I could see putting a horseradish spread on that, though. :hmm:

BLTs are amazing. Horseradish spread on a sandwich is indeed awesome though.

I'm thinking a nice steak sub, made with ribeye and filet so that there's no tough meat. Cooked with mushrooms, peppers, and onions, a mixture of provolone & mozzarella, fresh baked roll, light amount of mayonnaise, then toasted in an oven to melt the cheese, then topped with some veggies.

Hard to go wrong there either, but nomming on a huge Reuben still one of my favorite things

Sounds like an interesting idea really, think I have a couple small steaks might need thawing out would be good for that and wife restocked on mushrooms and peppers last night, and ground up some fresh mozzarella earlier in the week and think there is a bit of Provolone left......

For peppers, we always have a couple of jars of these around, she bought two for restocking.

Love these peppers, for general use, pretty much one of the always in stock thing in our house. Valdalia onions too I guess.

Use them for everything pepper related most of the time, still get fresh bell peppers now and then.

Just grab one straight out of the bottle occasionally.

Yep, found a couple little steaks in there gonna make for chopping.

Used to go to a mom and pop sub shop that made a cheeseburger with pastrami on it. I'd ride over there and get the sandwich with spicy mustard and a cold beer. So good.

Id we going fish on a sammich I'll vote grouper.

The wife didn't have it on a sammich though then I guess

Used to deep sea fish down here decades ago when I knew a few with boats and would pitch in for trips, never have owned one myself. Sea Bass and even Grunts are good eating also, one of the old guys at the time always swore a Sea Bass head was the best bait for Black Grouper and always stuck one on the line when we caught the first one.

Probably right, he usually got the first one, we always had running bets, first Grouper/Most Grouper/Largest Grouper, etc, etc.

You had to watch for guys chucking a big Lead Sinker into a fish, he he, then bust their butt if ya caught em.

I do love a tuna sandwich. Again its another one that is rarely decent out in the wild. Special mention to the tuna melt which is an all time favourite of mine.

I think the banh mi deserves a shout out; a banh mi with decent ingredients can be truly incredible.

All nuts? I know they make almond butter, cashew butter and several others.

Has anyone made a sandwich out of jelly and Trader Joe's cookie butter?

Nope, just peanuts fortunately. I have had almond butter & jelly before, was quite excellent. Too bad almond butter, at least the decent variety, seems to cost a bunch more than the peanut equivalent.

For a local sandwich, you can't beat the MD crabcake. As delicious as it is, I don't think it wins an overall competition. It's a great treat, but not good for year round use imo.

I used to feel the same way. I even know why. When I was about six my parents made me eat a Vienna sausage and mayo sandwhich on white bread before I could go to my friend's house. I vividly remember that and it's only recently that I learned that mayo isn't evil, in moderation.

Vienna sausage on the other hand...

This one too

Mayo disintergrates when you heat it, put that one on after cooking.

Absolutely. Not only is there the fact that cooking mayo ruins it, I like the interplay between hot and cold. For something like a grilled ham and cheese I cook first and then add the mayo and some lettuce so the hot is hot, the cold is cold and there's a nice balance between soft and crunchy.

Shoot, now I want a grilled ham and cheese.

The best kind of sammich is a bacon, fried potato and black pudding sammich when you have a hangover.

Excellent thread. I love sandwiches and some great suggestions here. I equally like mustard and mayo and find them to be acceptable but only on certain sandwiches. Horseradish is also divine on roast beef.

Some of my favorites.

-Chunky peanut butter and strawberry preserves (not jelly) on white
-Any kind of parmigiana. Veal, chicken, eggplant, meatball or sausage.
-Cracked pepper turkey with lite mayo, tomatoes and munster cheese
-Rueben sandwhich (corned beef) with sauerkraut and jarlsburg and russian dressing on pumpernickel or rye
-Pulled pork with cole slaw and southern red bbq sauce (ketchup and vinegar based sauce)
-Cuban sandwich
-
A pastrami from Katz. If there's one sandwich that should be on your bucket list, this is it.
Agreed, I love pastrami and katz's supposedly makes the best (waiting to try them next time I go to NYC). I like my pastrami sandwiches to have sauerkraut, dark mustard and melted cheese.
-BLT
-Prosciutto, mozzarella, basil and roasted red peppers (real roasted pepppers, not that crap from the can)
-Italian hero with all of the traditional cold cuts topped off by provolone, tomatoes, onions, pickled pepper sandwich toppers and shreded iceburg. Must have oil, vinegar, pepper and oregano
-Sausage & peppers
-Ham, salame & cheese with grey poupon mustard
-Tunafish (tuna in oil) with diced carrots peppers and celery with touch of mayo
-Very rare shaved roast beef with horseradish mayo and provolone cheese
-Liverwurst with onions and limburger cheese (best eaten before dentist visit )
-Marinated grill eggplant slices with real roasted peppers, mozzarella, olive oil and balsamic vinegar
-Grilled/fried chicken with mayo lettuce tomato
-New Jersey special: Taylor Ham egg and cheese on an everything bagel with pepper and ketchup.

Did I forget anything??

Edit: I did. Grilled cheese in cast iron pan with butter as the cooking fat. Ham/bacon inside the sandwich optional
