This is simple, instead of bashing or praising one particular game, let's just pick up one or more game(s) you liked, and then pick up one, or perhaps two (or more) that YOU thought (and not the overall community of that particular game or mod thought) was awesome, maybe even to the point where you just asked yourself why the mod's author(s) weren't paid for their masterpiece.

And this thread may help some players around who often just play a vanilla game without any modifications to explore such community creations for their favorite games around. I myself do it for such a purpose. I know I will discover modifications with your replies, amazing stuff that I simply missed or never heard of. Remember, the modification(s) doesn't have to be popular. It just has to be on the top of YOUR appreciation list ! It can be a very little, almost insignificant modification for the overall community, but it makes oh so much of a difference for you ...

And yes, it CAN be a Total Conversion mod, of course !

Let me start, with the following format: GAME(s) --- MOD(s)

Battlefield 1942 --- Desert Combat

Medieval II: Total War --- DarthMod
Medieval II: Total War --- Lands to Conquer

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl --- ABC Inferno

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion --- Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion --- Martigen's Monster Mod
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion --- Qarl's Textures Pack

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War -Dark Crusade- --- Dawn of Skirmish

The Battle for Middle-Earth II: The Rise of the Witch King --- RAF Mod

Star Wars: Empire at War -Forces of Corruption- --- Spaceship Addon

Half-Life --- Natural Selection
Half-Life --- Sven Co-Op
Half-Life --- Poke646

Half-Life 2 --- HL2 Substance

Command & Conquer: Generals -Zero Hour- --- Zero Hour Reborn: The Last Stand

That's about it for now, those I can remember by heart. But if I find more I will edit my post later.

What about your favorite mods ?

Marathon: Infinity --- Marathon: Rubicon

A single player campaign that is not only longer than the first and third games of the trilogy combined, but better as well. And I love all three.

HL2/Source --- Insurgency

There hasn't been as much lately as in the past, when Quake had mods like TF, Threewave CTF, Future vs Fantasy, Quake 2 had Action Quake 2, Half-life had Counterstrike, DoD, and paintball.

Damn that brings back memories. Future vs. Fantasy and paintball were awesome for QuakeWorld. Someone needs to make a FvF Half-Life 2 mod. :|

You can add The Long Road mod to the Medieval2 Total War category. I'd rank it #2 after LTC mod. For the Jagged alliance fans (yeah, I know its an old game) there is the JA2 v1.13 mod. Its nice. It allows for a lot of user customization. Those are the two game mods I been playing lately. Just installed the Rome Total Realism Platinum Edition mod and gonna give that a run this week and see if I like it. Waiting for RTR 7 to come out.

I have not been following the mod scene nearly as much as I once used to, but I've seen some excellent stuff in the past. I remember Descent 2 in particular had a whole bunch of fanmade level sets that were all much better than the official ones.

Descent 2 - Entropy series
Descent 2 - Obsidian
Tiberian Sun - Eternity (hard to beat this one for sheer insanity)
Freespace 2 - Beyond the Red Line (a BSG TC, only a demo has been released right now but it's fully playable and has a lot of content)
Freespace 2 - Shrouding the Light
Freespace 2 - The Procyon Insurgency D)
Deus Ex - Zodiac (fairly long, has many good ideas and some of the level design is superb, although some parts later on are dull)
Unreal Tournament - Carry the Flag (a very simple mutator, but I think it makes the already excellent CTF gameplay quite a bit better)

There is also a big TC for Battlezone 2 called Forgotten Enemies, which is supposed to be very good although I haven't gotten around to trying it. UT is also supposed to have a number of great singleplayer campaigns.

Does anyone know of any other good mission sets for Deus Ex?

Keep posting 'em guys, I'm taking lots of notes

I will have to re-install some of my older games and try out a few mods posted here which I never heard about. And if I can find them, I'll try to buy them brand new or second-hand at my local store.

I can think of a buttload right now for Elder Scrolls 3 and 4.
The most important one is for Morrowind: Private Mobile Base.

Its a HUGE floating house that can teleport itself over most towns and a handful of important areas on Vvardenfell. It can also teleport YOU to many areas.
It has a big general purpose storeroom with tons of neatly placed chests with practically infinite capacity.
It has a big training room with all kinds of neat monsters to fight.
A weapons and armor display room, a pool, a realy slick alchemy room (also with loads of boxes for general storage) 4 bedrooms, two of which are really nice and one even has a guy to buy junk from you. It also has all the usual dining and sitting areas and a bookshelf and plenty of cool decorations and even a trapdoor up top so you can walk around outside a thousand feet in the air and admire the countryside.
Heck, they even put a mini storage area right inside the front door so you have important stuff readily available. Its also a great way to spend all that extra gold you have in the late game. The guy sells keys to each room for a steep price.

Overall, excellent. The PBM for Morrowind. I highly recommend.

Have been looking for something similar for Oblivion and havent quite found it, BUT, in that game they had the good sense to put houses for sale in each town. They also added many cool houses in the expansions.
Lately I've been checking out that one good site for mods: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/categories.php
Will have to see if I can find what I want.

For Knights of the Old Republic 2 there are a bunch of large downloads to improve the video clip and music quality in the game. There are also a hanful to fix the gameplay itself but thats another issue.

Unreal Tournament (UT99) - Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror (before they went commercial)

It's a CS clone, and probably not that well known outside of the UT community. Certainly never achieved the level of fame that the real CS did.

I tried that out some years ago. It seemed very well polished and pretty good for what it was supposed to be, although I'm generally not a fan of that sort of gameplay. I remember the police bots could bump into the hostages, which occasionally caused the hostages to spring up on top of their heads and move around with them while retaining their sitting poses.

Hehe, my fondest memory was the unintentionally hilarious voice work. It was painfully obvious the voices were done by some teenage kid who wasn't quite out of puberty yet. When you shot the hostages by accident, they'd cry out "Ohhh the pain!" . The fake foreign accents for the terrorists were pretty amusing too.

Half-life - Desert Crisis

Great multiplayer mod that never gained all that much popularity. Tons of weapons/perks (yeah, take that, COD4!), and it took genuine skill.

The only few that I've actually put considerable time into are as follows.

Quake 1: Team Fortress
Quake 2: Action Quake
Warcraft 3: DoTA (consider a custom map a mod?)
Halflife 1/2: CS/CSS TFC/TF2

Team Aerial Combat (TAC) for Tribes 1! Did anybody else play this? Big floating bases, you could only jetpack around or hitch a ride on a ship, and if you touched the ground, you instantly died?

I spent so many hours zooming around in scouts, lining up my targets and ramming right in to them, ejecting at the very last minute!

I miss Tribes...

For me the Simpsons mod for Doom 2 was awesome. Instead of Imps throwing fireballs at you, you had Flanders throwing bibles at you saying "okely dokely" and so on.

Oblivion: Oscuro, Qarl's texture pack, grass polygon reduction. For some reason I can't get Mart's Monsters for Oscuro to work!!
