My favorite sleeper game has to be BattleZone. I loved that damn game. I use to play it for hours. It was a RTS game combined with a FPS. A revolutionary game that quietly disappeared.

That game was so much fun. Unfortunately it (or maybe it was BZ2, or both) ALWAYS crashed within 30 minutes of multiplayer. Would love a remake of this one.

Dark Messiah of M&M was quite good although it got no publicity.

Rise of Nations is probably the best RTS of all time, but it never got a huge following like SC.

A Tale in the Desert is an unusual MMO, without violence, where people cooperate on tradeskills and various 'tests'. Free to try the first 24 hours.

During the first bit, you master some basic skills - learn to pick wood and make a device to make boards, grow flax and convert it, etc. You can build buildings.

BZ and BZ2 were wonderful games.

BZ2 almost had a working coop that would have been very fun.

Oh and Raid over Moscow for the C64.. that was awesome back in the day.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto

It was a third person shooter/rts hybrid.

I love that game. I own it for PC and for PS2 (have never played the PS2 version though, in fact just recently bought it and my PS2 hasn't been plugged in in years. Bought it out of respect for the game and the fact that it was cheap and a novelty.)

Giants: Citizen Kabuto had great humor, great music (it was the first time I heard music by Jeremy Soule, who would later go on to do Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and LOTS of other important game music)

Looked good graphically when it first came out too.

Had nudity! haha

It was an unusual, funny, grand game.

Myself I'd say Thief: The Dark Project though maybe that was too successful to be a "sleeper" it certainly didn't get the recognition it deserved.

Trying to think of something more obscure...

drawing a blank.

Giants was great. If you liked that one you should also check out Armed & Dangerous.

I remember some crashes but there just wasn't enough online players to keep it going. I never did buy BZ2. I played the demo off a PC Gamer demo disc but I just never got around to buying it (I must have been on a gaming budget at the time). I should see if Steam has it and see if it will run on my Windows 7 PC.

In no particular order of preferences, they're just the ones that come to my mind immediately in similar topics.

Body Harvest (Nintendo 64) (The first sandbox-style game I played)
PowerSlave (PSX) (Also known as Exhumed, great Doom-clones era FPS)
Warzone 2100 (PSX) (A forgotten gem, I still own my original PSX copy)
Codename: Tenka (PSX) (Loved it, and back then I don't think it was praised)
Shadow Man (Dreamcast) (One of the best A-Adventure style game I have ever played)
MDK2 (Dreamcast) (Total sleeper hit of epic proportions, adored the game, still own it)
Red Faction (PS2) (The original's release I believe wasn't preceded by much hype)
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (PC) (Very underrated)
Prey (PC) (Superb game overall, in my opinion, especially the introduction)

And of course many more but I would have to look around the web for them and I don't feel like it for now.

Does Planescape: Torment qualify? Technically it did horrible when it was released but is now considered a classic.

Ok, seriously. there was this game called M.U.L.E WAY back on the Atari (or was int NES?). It was HUGE fun and I remember having endless hours with it. Not only was it fun, but you got to learn some about economics as well.

Seriously, did you check my link out?

I think Uprising was more innovative than BZ1.

My opinion of course, but I would play Uprising over BZ1 if I had a choice.
