wow... no matter how long this thread goes, i wouldnt have expected to see that name.
Lawler actually started all kinds of things. He was the first wrestler with a music video
In the early to mid 80's, Memphis was the heart of professional wrestling. Lawler used to have a little trick, throwing fire on his opponents, the pow-driver (or however it's spelled). There was a consession stand fight, and not like one I saw on WWF, they actuallly fought in a real consession stand, out in the hall of the coliseum, with fans watching a few feet away. One time, they got into a fight outside the arena, on camera, and some people walking down the street ended up calling the police (not knowing it was an act on tv of course). It was crazy. And then of course, Andy Kaufman made his visit, which grew national attention. It was funny stuff.
Others that came out of Memphis: The Moondogs, Kamala the African Giant, Handsome Jimmy Valiant, Jimmy Hart, The Fabulous Ones, Bill Dundee. Good grief, the crap that's still stuck in my head all these years.
The funniest things I remember was that one of the two commentators was also a very well-respected weatherman on the same channel.
Dave Brown.
