The Big GOrb dissapointment!

:disgust: I read endless threads and reviews on the GOrb and decided it was a good solution for my C600 & P3V4X machine. Well it seemed to be quite OK while it was winter here in OZ but I always knew the real test would be in summer when the ambient room temps get to around 30C. I have only O'ced to 675 because anything over that and the temps get into the 50C's and that is unaceptable. Idle temps are good at around 34C with RAIN running but as soon as I get into a bit of serious gaming the temps are just way to high for my liking. I have two extra case fans a slot cooler and a Blue Orb on my MX card and still get high CPU temps. :| The crunch I heard when I put it on also gave me a fright and I have been reluctant to take it off and reseat it just i case It's not sitting perfectly flat on the die. It looks OK from side on and doesn't seem to be on an angle at all but I can't be 100% sure. I'd rather just get a better CPU cooler that won't be too heavy for my slot converter. So if anyone has a better CPU cooling solution for my setup I would be very interrested to hear from you.
And yes I did put a thin layer of thermal compound on it after I took the crap off that it came with.

I got alot better performance after lapping my Gorb. 5c less on average.

Also, if you don't have proper airflow in your case, your CPU might be sitting in an airflow dead area. Make sure that one of the case fans is in the bottom from blowing in, and the other sucking air out behind the CPU at the top of the case. Otherwise you might just be blowing hot air back to the CPU.

smp, keep in mind that intel CPUs run much cooler than amd CPUs. a Celeron 600 running in the 50C's is exceptionally high, whereas similar temps for an AMD are only slightly above average...

intel system is not as hot as amd system

i have both and the intel system temp is just max at 35celcius ( using a chrome orb)

and my amd system is at 42celcius (using alpha)

all temp is under full load

Thanks guys.. I do have a fan at the front of my case blowing in and another right behind the slocket sucking out but this doesn't seem to help the high temps. I have a horrible feeling that the G'Orb isn't sitting completely flat on the die. If others get 35C max then that can be the only reason it's getting hot. I relise that room temps have alot to do with it but I can't belive that the G'Orb is at it's full efficiency. I still would like to know if there are any better solutions out there? Is the FOP32 good for a C600 on a slot converter? Do CoolerMaster make any good solutions? Thanks in advance

The early versions of the motherboard you are using is well known for having problems with correct temperature readings (they typically read high). You may want to make sure your running the latest bios as I believe later versions corrected the error.

50C for a C2 is way too high even with an Gorb. I suspect you have a bad reading or the CPU fan is not aligned properly. I once tested a C2566 with an Gorb and RS thermal compound and forgot to plug in the Gorb fan. System ran for 2 hrs at 850 before I noticed the error. CPU temp went up to about 55C. Anything over 45C on C2 and Gorb combo is cause for concern - not so much that your gonna kill the CPU but that soemthings not right.

ased on my experience, the GORB does a good job up to about 900 Mhhz on the C2's. Anything over that, I would go with the GW FOP32-1.

Look people, saying what temp your CPU is running is pointless.

Afterall a CPU running at 35C when the ambient temp is 30C is much better than a CPU running at 28C when the ambient temp is 18C.

So just saying how much over ambient your CPU runs, makes a lot more sense. My overclocked Duron runs 6 to 12C over ambient.

So in my case where room temps often hover around 30C an idle temp of 34C is good but the max temps under load like 50C is bad huh!?? It looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and Lap the G'Orb and take my chance with the reseating. Any tips that will help ensure that I don't smash that CPU core? Mabee after lapping it won't be so harsh when I reinstall it???

I don't trust any Orb's, Stick with a conventional rectangular heatsink. A 15C jump from IDLE to MAX is way too high, something is certainly wrong with the heatsink and/or thermal paste. Try resitting it, and if that doesn't solve your problems go out and get a FOP32 or something.

I (still) have similar problems with my Duron: first I bought some no-name case and cooler and CPU's temperature was something around 50-52 C by mobo's thermistor (ASUS A7V, full-load, ambient temp ~22-25 C). Considered that a bit too warm I dumped no-name cooler and replaced it with Titan Majesty V TTC-M5: CPU temp still up to 50C. Sold no-name case and bought AOpen's HQ45 (probably not the best case avalible but I couldn't get anything fancy) : CPU up to 48-49C. I don't think that extra fans in case would help much cause it was pretty cool inside. Now, should I just either exept that mobo's thermistor shows BS or try to do something more to keep the temp down ? Mikewarrior2, please give some advice

I bought an enlight and a superorb for my duron at 650 (no o/c) and cpu temps and case temps are just fine. You can get superorbs for liek 20-25 and they run great.
