I kind of want to play this game, but I kind of don't. It looks... dark.

Basically, it's about a kid named Isaac who's mother "starts hearing the voice of God demanding a sacrifice be made to prove her faith," and upon hearing this, Isaac escapes to the basement where he fights in rooms full of dirt, shit, deranged enemies, and lost siblings, all while crying the entire time.

It probably depends on who you are. I might sound like a pussy saying this, but I fear this game might do more psychological damage to me than any regular video game should.

But at the same time, it's only $5. :awe:

It's a "randomly generated action RPG shooter with heavy Rogue-like elements." What do you guys think?

Regarding weirdness, the plotline of the game is quite unsettling, yes, but technically it's described as a roguelike shooter based off of the dungeon structure of the old Zelda games.

I'll probably pick it up.

So far it's ok, but whoever thought that binding the full screen toggle to the F key should be smacked...

I've died countless times due to that.

I may just suck at old style games but I find this and Super Meat Boy like insanely challenging. Not that there is anything wrong with it. I get a real sense of accomplishment when I make it further then I did the time before. But holy fuck these games are hard.

Super Meat Boy you have to like attain perfection on every level, especially the boss levels. This is a little more forgiving in it's play. But then you die and have to start all over again. Still excellent game and great time killer.

And to the people who asked: No, there's no save feature. A single game isn't intended to last for more than one sitting. Which is cool, because you can just sit down and kill ~20 minutes playing it, and if you die, you can just try again some other time. There's a ton of replay value because of the random level generation. Every game is different.

I had a blast with crawl and Dungeons of Dreadmor so I think I'd enjoy this. It was also added to the latest humble bundle so I don't even have to buy it haha

Kind of makes you wonder what kind of childhood this dude had to make a game like this haha

I wish the randomness was a little LESS random though as it seems there has been several times where it looked like I was unable to get to something because I hadn't ran into that key yet. There is an unlockable character who carries a key at level 1 as opposed to a bomb, those situations are geared at him.

The level generation can either be in your favor, or totally against you.

For example, there have been some playthroughs where I made it really far, because I was lucky enough to get lots of good drops.

On the other hand, there have been some playthroughs where I had terrible luck; either there are no good items, or there ARE good items, buy they happen to be somewhere inaccessible (behind a bunch of rocks or on an isolated platform surrounded by impassable holes).

It makes the game far more interesting though. Occasionally you will come across a locked door, and you simply know you will never be able to open it, because you have no keys and you won't be finding another before going onto the next level. In that case you just keep marching on and do the best you can.

It's the way the game is designed. You won't always be able to explore every room, and you can't pick up every item.

I'm not enjoying this game as much as I'd hoped I would. The dark and twisted atmosphere is definitely a change but this doesn't compare to other games of the same genre. I think I put around 60 hours into Dungeons of Dredmor which I had a blast with. I think the fact that this game doesn't allow for much customization and that it forces you to use only ranged combat kind of ruins it for me.

I'll be playing a bit more before I decide I don't like it of course.
