I'm currently quite enamored by Hoodoo Man Blues by Junior Wells and the eponymous Otis Spann is the Blues. I also really like Muddy Waters and SRV, but I want some more of the smoky old school shit. Suggestions?

Nice List! I would add Albert Collins and Wes Montgomery (although he might be more jazzy) and you would have a great line up of artists from the various blues eras.

Fritzo, you're the man! Peter Green is my absolute favorite guitarist RIIIIIGHT behind Jimi. If you're a fan, listen to Worried Dream during this concert. Absolutely captivating. This is exactly what I'm looking for, more of the slow, syrupy, smoky soulful stuff that sends chills down your spine and goes perfect with comfy chair and a nice scotch. And/or joint.

So where can I find more from Mr. Green, who was referenced by BB King as "The only man who ever made me sweat."?

Yah, I'm a blues musician (harp-player). If you're really into that album I would also recommend the Chicago classic West Side Soul by Magic Sam. Great stuff.

I could give you a million other albums but that's a good place to start. Then all the "Chess Box" stuff series are really good.

Here are three great Depression era blues artists: Nehemiah Curtis "Skip" James, Blind Willie Johnson, and Eddie James "Son" House. Son House was an influence for Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. Lucky for us, Skip James and Son House were rediscovered in the 60's and were able to re-record many songs.

Well, if you really want to go back I know a lot these little known pre-WWII musicians like like the harp player- De Ford Bailey, a virtuoso who was considered Country Music's first "Black star". He was the Grand Ol' Oprey's only Black artist and played with them until the 40's and was layed off for (of all reasons) that he wasn't part of the Musician's Union. He actually recorded some tracks before he died in his late 70's (luckily I have this CD ).

That Magic Sam sounds like I would really like it, I'm gonna have to make a trip out to Amoeba on Haight one of these days and just get a shitload of stuff. They've got pretty much ALL their albums on the computers so you can listen before you buy, it's really really cool.
Son House is really cool too, keep em coming.

Pick up Man of the World: The Anthology. It's got a lot of hard to find tracks on it. I've been using this album to get suggestions on adding emotion to my playing.

Also, look for live performances from your standards: BB King's "Live at the Regal", Albert King's "Born Under a Bad Sign", Willie Dixon's "I Am The Blues" sessions, and any Buddy Guy recordings (especially when he was with Junior Wells). Top notch stuff.
