I always thought that landing on free parking entiled you to the money set in the middle. Money that was set there from paying taxes and fees from community chest.
You didn't read the rules. It's called Free Parking... not Lottery Parking.

That's how we played too, but I knew it was a made up rule.

Read this article yesterday. Never realized that a property gets auctioned if the person landing on it doesn't want to buy it. That said, still doesn't make me want to play the game.

"Whenever you land on an unowned property you may buy that property from the Bank at its printed price," read the official rules. "You receive the Title Deed card showing ownership; place it face-up in front of you. If you do not wish to buy the property, the Banker sells it at auction to the highest bidder. The buyer pays the Bank the amount of the bid in cash and receives the Title Deed card for that property. Any player, including the one who declined the option to buy it at the printed price, may bid. Bidding may start at any price."
WHAT!?!?

I never knew that!

That would definitely speed up the game.

Yeah, I played with the real rules once and it was weird. In my experience, bidding for properties always ended up with prices that were higher than the list price, so I learned to basically just buy everything you can.

I read the rules when I was 5 or so, but, my family liked to play the wrong way even after I showed them the rules. They were no fun to play with.

I said it in the original thread and I'll ask it again here:
Why would you not buy every property you land on?

Does no one read the rules and use them to their advantage against unwitting opponents anymore?! WTF???!!!

This is why America is failing, people don't read shit anymore. They use strictly word of mouth and tradition to do dumb shit and then wonder why they no longer control their own destiny and success.

We usually end up spending a good 30min before the game arguing over what house rules we’re going to play with.

Rules are meant to be broken. That's why we have moderators.

House rules trump Game rules.
(but must be agreed upon before playing)

Monopoly is one of the biggest house rule changes board game out there. There are plenty of rules that change based on who/where you play, enough to the point digital monopoly versions now allow you to customize a lot of these rules.

I gave a list in the post that was about this yesterday so I will not repeat, but there are plenty of rules that are customized on Monopoly.

Clearly you aim to be in the middle of a human CentIpad with that kind of logic.

Seriously though, bidding on properties that some moron doesn't want to buy straight away is a critical next level of torture for them. NEVER bid more than the face value of the property unless there's a strategic advantage. Always low ball the property value with the bank and hope to get lucky.

This is what I don't get either, first few times around you should buy everything you land on, after 2-3 times around if you do not have a utility, do not buy them at this point. Otherwise BUY BUY BUY!

As someone that read the rules, none of these are surprising or BS to me. I believe many of the things people are used to playing by are including in the variants of some of the rule copies.

Dear God, if you didn't know about Free Parking and Auctioning of properties than I don't know what to tell you. The house limitation is there for a reason, manipulation of the housing market can keep a later monopoly collector from ever building up.

But remember, there is NOTHING in the rules that says you can't trade things like future options, limited/full immunity, partial profits, etc in the property trading part of the game.

A property always has some innate worth to a player, it is trying to find it that is the real aspect of this game. You want immediate return on investment, the utilities are the way to go... but everyone will say they are crap. They are crap ONLY if people collect a monopoly. Once somebody does that, you better be dealing for your own QUICK.

We always had a house rule where the person who suggested playing Monopoly wasn't invited to future parties.

I found my OLD bad of multi sided dice the other day. I've been wanting to play Monopoly with the gf and my offspring using a 20 sided die. Bet that would make things interesting.

Of course, everyone buys every property they can afford.

This changes things drastically though, because if you can't afford it, you and everyone else has a chance at it for $1.

It would speed up the game tremendously.

In a 4 player game, the properties would be bought up 4x as fast. (not exactly 4x, but i'm going to do the statistics... )

Someone should make realistic monopoly. Where you buy properties but fund half of it from massive bank loans set up in special purpose vehicles for which you have no liability if they go under, and where the general economy impacts property prices.

You get rental income from properties and can use it to fund more properties, or pay down your current loans, but if your loans break any covenants you need to refinance ASAP, and there are multiple bankers.

And you can remortgage if you want, depending on interest rates, or enter swaps if you are feeling like you need to mix it up a bit.
Allow joint ventures on properties between players.

Make it so that you can learn from playing, rather than this rubbish simplistic game.
