Thanks for the info. Learn something new again.

Now to find out if my motherboard can do the 'NVMe'... (ASRock Z97 Extreme6)
Some did, but they all had limitations. Your motherboard did in fact have one.

To keep the explanation simple here, and not hijack the thread, they can't run current NVMe drives as fast as they can go on current motherboards.

Edit: Here's a thread where someone had a similar motherboard, and what performance to expect with a current NVMe SSD on your motherboard:

I saw 3x mentioned, but I'm not sure if that was the comparable MB or a more current one. Advice seemed to be, my MB can do it, but not a big deal, just get NVMe going forward with this MB or a newer MB.

According to my Mobo's manual this comes into play,
"M2_2 and SATA3_3 share lanes. If either one of them is in use, the other one will be disabled. "
So this means if I use the M2_2 option I cannot use SATA at all?.

Kingston A400 M.2 SATA for $21.99.
OK Mr ball-breaker, here's a REALLY bad one, in the '80's I paid $200 for a Commodore 1541 floppy disk drive. Even in 1980's dollars it was worth it to ascend from the purest form of storage hell, the "Datasette". Even on a 64K RAM machine I would start to load a program and then take a shower, when I was finished I would return, one prayed there was not one crinkle in the tape because if there was it would load errors and not run.

No. It means you cannot use sata3_3. Look at your manual or motherboard - they should be labelled _0,_1,_2,_3
--
Also m.2 is an interface; nearly all m.2 interfaces support both sata and nvme (pcie); and different pin determine which interface the drive uses.
-
There is a newer interface that will likely replace m.2 in a few years (I think the newest boards have that interface). It is nvme but with more pcie lanes for faster rates.

Oh, OK, thank you for clearing this up for me!.

500GB Crucial MX500 for 56.99. Not an amazing deal but they are solid drives with good reliability. My old MX300 is still chugging along fine.

Pity this thread isn't older. I mean it shows some price changes in ssd (page 1 has $59 for 240GB mlc drive). If only this thread had started in 2013

I think I remember paying $500 for a 300MB hard drive that was an incredible bargain at the time.

I can beat that, I paid $180 for a refurb Commodore 1541 5.25 floppy disk drive. Considering it finally got me away from the living horror of the "datasette" it was worth every penny!.

PNY 240GB SSD for .. $27.
11¢ per GB
I think that BestBuy on ebay has those at that price as well. I saw those... AFTER I bought a qty. of the 250GB models (newer model), for like $35 ea. shipped. Oh well.

Good find, though. PNY is a US company, with US warranty. Reviews on Newegg on their CS900 drives are kind of mixed, some DOAs, but overall, I've had good experiences with them. (Though, haven't been running any long-term, just budget builds. I like the 3-year US warranty.)

Edit: They've got the 120GB CS900 model for $17.99 too.

I bought a 250Gb Kingston from Amazon for $26 about 6 months ago, it's still the same price. Some negative reviews on it but you can find that on most brands, with pricing so low these days how much time can they spend on quality for $26?.

I got tired of re-aligning the heads because of some of the copy protection used back then. A D9060 would load in 1/4 the time and had a whopping 5MB of space for a couple grand. The ST-10 was a bargain at $900 for 10MB. although it wasn't much faster than a 1541.

Wow, I mean WOW!, $900 for 10MB, yea, I remember the constant chattering of hearing the read/write head getting a beat-down smacking the end of it's travel as copy protection had it reading sectors that normally were not written to in 1541 use.

Team Group GX1 480GB SATA6G 2.5" SSD $45.99.

Given the recent up-tick in DRAM and NAND prices, this seems like a sort of "last hurrah" for budget drives for a while. The 512GB GX2 is $54.99 in the e-mail flyer.

Supposedly, this drive is DRAM-less, but then again, so is the Crucial BX500, and that one performs alright.

Reviews on reliability are mixed on this drive. Probably not the best drive for a business laptop, I would probably spec out a Samsung. But for a gaming rig or "Grandma browser-box", something like this should be fine.

I know, didn't I make this thread last year? Well, yes, but a few things have changed (budget, mainly), plus I was gone for the holidays and wouldn't have had time to build it until this year anyway.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Primarily: music recording and editing on Linux. This means:
  • Must be as quiet as possible
  • Must have noise-free USB power
I'm no longer willing to die on the "no dedicated GPUs or 4K on Linux" hill, I switched to KUbuntu at work and it handled both of those things remarkably well.

Also, I've taken up (extremely) amateur photography, so occasionally I'll be developing RAW images, editing, etc.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
$1400

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
US (NYC)

4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US,

5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
Noctua for all cooling. Within reason, of course. Like if it physically doesn't fit the case I'm not gonna dremel it apart just to keep a streak going.

6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
I have a 4 TB HDD left over from a previous build.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Defaults. Maybe underclock the GPU if it keeps the noise down.

8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?
2x 4K. 2x DP would be neat, DP+HDMI is also acceptable.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
I can start ordering parts this weekend.

10. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?
*laughs in open source*
All I see are links to "Are you a human?"
New egg links show like that with the new forums for some reason.
Click on the “are you human” to see the product
It comes down to how people link to Newegg. When I link to Newegg items, there is no automatic "are you human" preview
https://www.newegg.com/aego-rainbow-240gb/p/0D9-00EA-00002?Item=9SIAJ6P8CM4993

I'm not sure what others are doing to have the link show up that way, but take V Larry's link for example, it is ending up looking like this:
