Oh FFS, deal was too good and I couldn't resist. Samsung 990 PRO 4TB for $200 if you belong to a variety of EPP programs (including AAA membership):

If you use a Chase credit card, also check your Chase Offers for a Samsung cashback offer to sweeten the deal.

That is pretty nice. Sadly, I gave up waiting for a super hot deal on a 4 TB NVME and settled for a simple Inland Prime 2 TB TLC drive from Microcenter the other week. Finally retired an old WD Blue 1 TB spinner.

Fyi there is a problem with wd extreme-pro ssd and many are failing with total data loss; so if you see those on sale avoid them. Quite frankly i stopped buying sandisk ssd when wd acquired them.

The thing is I wasn't exactly in the market for a high end 4TB SSD. I do have tentative plans to build a new desktop PC, but that's entirely dependent on Black Friday deals. Technically BF is already starting, so it's unclear if we'll see any spectacular savings on components. So a fast, affordable 2TB drive was on my parts list, but yesterday's deal was too good to pass on.

The main limiting factor in my eyes are GPU prices (options are good with Intel joining the 2 incumbents). I'd love a sale on an 7800 XT, or even RDNA 2 for the right price. If you need to give away (figuratively) your RX 6600, shoot me a PM.

I did pick up an entry-level Inland 2TB SSD a year ago for the laptop, and it's worked fine. I really don't have extreme storage needs, but it was a great deal at the time shortly before NAND prices collapsed.

I have seen that prices on SSDs are increasing again. That said, prices aren't necessarily bad, to be fair. Are you looking for NVMe or SATA?

Might have been posted before but I’ve been using 2x of the DRAM-less SiliconPower 4 TB drives and been really happy with them. One is in my X570 desktop and it’s neck and neck performance with my 1 TB WD SN850x OS drive. The second drive is in an older laptop running as the main/OS disk under PCIe gen3 and also gives great performance considering.

I can't comment on current pricing but with the recent screwup by wd (sandsik) black ssd (which before wd purchase were very very reliable); i mostly only buy samsung ssd.

Interesting ..... while I was aware of a firmware issue with a couple specific Sandisk-branded EXTERNAL drives causing data-loss, this is the first I've heard of any problems with WD Black drives in any format. Source?

HOWEVER what I am also aware of for a fact is that quite a few late-version Samsung 980 Pro's and an entire generation of of the 990 Pro's took things a step further and frequently DIED along with the data loss.

The two WD Black 1tb NVME drives I'm currently running (one 24/7) for nearly 2 years have been flawless. (to be fair however so have about 20 Samsung SATA/NVME SSD's in the past)

I posted it earlier in this thread; there is a design issue with the wd black ssd and the resisters are too large for the ciricuit board (or something like that) and breaking. It is a design issue esp in larger drives and not fixable with firmware and result in pretty much large amount of data loss. Haven't head of actual design problem with samsung drives - do you have a source - is it a design issue or people just expected them to last longer than their stated r/w cycles ? I mean i know older samsung drives the specs understated significantly but as long as they are accurate that is user error.
---
I found the issue - it sounds similar (almost identical to the bug seagate had a few years ago - when you write a small amount of data it writes a much larger amount causing the wear to be magnified). Like seagate the issue is fixable via firmware update - i wouldn't be shocked if the bug is the same bug. However the wear actually done to the drive is done since it really did write that much data.

If you want more you'll need to Google it yourself. A smaller number of 980 Pro's were also affected.

Users say Samsung’s latest Pro SSDs have health problems (theverge.com)

Don't get me wrong now .... I've owned by far more Samsung SSD's than any other brand and had exactly ONE failure. (buggy firmware in a SATA 840 Pro) Promptly RMA'ed under warranty by Samsung)

Any good deals on TLC based SSDs now 2tb+?
The short answer is no, prices are up significantly since last fall when there still was a NAND glut. But it can't be a permanent situation (like say GPUs*), so if you don't need something soon, $/TB will eventually drop back down to good deals.

Just for example, last fall you could get Intel 670p 2TB for about $65ish + tax. I think that model is forever gone (as Intel sold its NAND biz to SK Hynix, now branded as Solidigm).

* Even GPUs are cheaper now than 2 years ago, but Nvidia's gross price points seem to be here to stay for good.

Write amplication bugs have hit various SSDs for a long time; Intel 520 had one way back when. By the time they released a firmware fix years later, the damage had long been done.

I just recently installed a 980 PRO, manufactured in Feb 2023. Samsung Magician said it already has the newest firmware. 🤷‍♂️ I have a NIB 990 PRO that I should sell, but I hate going through the effort lol.

That article was from over a year ago. I thought Samsung developed a firmware fix??

They did per my post. I don't know if this is the same bug that seagate had but if it was the problem was that for every block it wrote it would write (i think) 1MB. So if you wrote large amounts of data it wasn't a big issue but if you committed a bunch of small blocks you amplified the wear. I think in our case we were burning out the seagate drives in months (these were enterprise drives) before the firmware fix. Fortunately since we were doing 100 of million of dollar of business we were able to expediate response (we being the company i worked with at the time).

This is a good deal for today. Eventually prices will go back down, so buy when you need it OR around Black Friday when sale prices tend to be great.

They did.

Personally I'd still steer clear of the 990 Pro at least as a boot-drive. (the vast majority of 980 Pro's didn't have this issue)

Samsung SSD's are my top choice overall as a brand.
