I'm with the OP. I made it through a whole opera season, (5-6 shows?) but couldn't take any more.

Go ahead and call me uncultured, (the gf did) but sitting uncomfortably in a suit for 3 hours listening to someone screech in a language I didn't understand (there were subtitles) and a story that could have been summed up in about 5 minutes is NOT my idea of a good time.

I'm pretty openminded - but the opera really wasn't my cup of tea.

And on the uncultured note, 400 years from now, are people's girlfriends going to be forcing them to see "movies" in "movie theaters" just like "people used to do" ?

How can you say "people used to do" it if people are still doing it? New operas are being composed all the time, and the culture is by no means a mere artifact of a dead culture. Perhaps this is why you have no understanding or appreciation of it.
