The Day the NewEgg died?

I was driving home from work today and heard a NewEgg radio spot on the Bay Area's Live 105 (alt. rock). The commercial contained singing renditions of their testimonials. Pretty lame. Has anyone else heard these?

It got me thinking though. I have noticed NewEgg's prices have not been as hot as in the past. Could the price of this advertising be the reason? Not that I am against advertising, it just made me miss the good ol' days of grassroots word of mouth growth.

They still have good prices on stuff...it's their horrid way of calculating shipping that usually forces me to go elsewhere.

Newegg has sucked for quite a while now.

High prices & horrible shipping costs.

One thing to note, though: I still browse Newegg as opposed to ZZF or some other sites simply because of the great interface. Browsing products on ZZF SUCKS. I click on Athlon 64 and am brought to ONE PAGE with every single type of A64 chip on it.

And that's the way they make money. If not for that, it would be very hard for them.

Same here. I've recently discovered a couple other stores, but none have the great selection that NewEgg has. I recently ordered a heatsink for my processor from NewEgg, and it cost me $25 to ship it. That's just ridiculous.

Their search interface pwns. I usually browse newegg to look for product's specs, pics, and find out what products are out there. Nowadays their pricing is mediocre (but MUCH better than WorstBuy/CrapUSA (in MOST cases, occasionally they have good deals and beat Newegg down, ex: 160GB HD at BestBuy for $50)

And WTF is with the Super Saving Deals that save you $4?

Yeah the shipping prices vary wildly but they always seem to get stuff delivered mighty quick.

/me remembers ordering my P3-450 rig in 99' from them. Still have the CD holder visor thingy they sent me.

The other day I saw a freakin' NewEgg.com billboard on my way to work in Portland, OR.

I think their money is probably better spent on their RMA process and offering an affiliate incentive!

Newegg is the best of the best. I have not seen to this day better customer service, shipping and prices combined.

newegg is going public so they are probably trying to increase brand recognition

Advertising is definitely ultra expensive and may show the company is slipping in their word of mouth strategy of before. These things just have a domino effect and so sooner or later everything just falls apart.

I've been rather dissapointed with Newegg myself and haven't bought anything there in quite a while. I think they're trying to do too much and should just focus on the qualities they started out with like excellent customer service, fast shipping, lowest prices, etc.

They give inceentives to other websites to sell their products for them IMO.

Heard them on Channel 105.3 today while I was driving to Palo Alto. Same station.. heh maybe we heard the same thing. Thought it was weird though...

Newegg has never been the cheapest retailer. I went to Monarch today and snatched some OCZ VX4000 for $164. CPUs are cheaper at ZZF than at Newegg. So whats the point...

I still love newegg and I'll buy anything "important" (mobo, video card) there since I know I can rely on the great RMA process if things go wrong.

but sales tax in NJ + extremely high shipping costs compared to competitors means that I'm shopping elsewhere for everything else.
