I guess once you pass once they probably don't test again. We get paycheck credit for biometric screenings every year. They used to prick your finger but now they take two vials of blood. It's mostly for checking sugar levels and other data but who knows what else they look for.

Below a certain size companies generally don't bother, especially for office staff and people who aren't operating machinery and creating potential liability. I've only had to take one test in my entire working career.

The new policy where I work says that if you're injured on the job in any manner, it's an automatic drug test, white-collar or blue-collar. (I wonder if upper management is exempt? :hmm

note: no further drug testing beyond initial hiring. needless to say, if they tested post-hire they'd have a lot less employees.

Accidents on heavy equipment/industry operations happen infrequently. Just because someone has a past history of no errors while high/drunk/whatever doesn't mean they should be immune from being fired due to being under the influence.

Should someone who's an operator at a nuke plant not be fired for going into work drunk just because he hasn't caused a meltdown yet?

If your job has you operating heavy machinery that would be an example of an obvious exception. I don't know about the nuke plant, how easy is it to cause a meltdown?

Not very. Though because of the importance of such a position I would agree you probably shouldnt be high or drunk, even if the likelihood of something happening requiring your attention is very low.
